Three shot dead, many injured as Terhemen Tarzoor wins Benue PDP gov primary

Former Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Terhemen Tarzoor, has emerged the winner of the Peoples Democratic Party governorship primaries concluded in the early hours of Tuesday.
The election, which started at the Aper Aku stadium around 1.10am on Tuesday, was rounded off around 5.02am by the Chairman of the electoral panel, Ambassador Adamu Daura, with the announcement.
The exercise was witnessed by Governor Gabriel Suswam and President of the Senate David Mark.
Tarzoor, according to the Chairman, polled 517 votes out of the 974 accredited votes from the 23 local governments.
He said, “As the chief returning officer of the Benue PDP 2014 governorship primary election, I hereby declare Terhemen Tarzoor as the winner, after polling a total of 517 votes ahead of others contestants.”
Incumbent state Deputy Governor, Chief Steve Lawani, and a former Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Investment, Chief Samuel Ortom, scoring 311 and 117 votes respectively.
Others in the contest were a former Minister of State for Niger Delta, Sam Ode; former Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa, who scored 48 and 47 votes respectively.
In his acceptance speech, Tarzoor enjoined other aspirants to join him to ensure victory for the party in the state.
Meanwhile, before the commencement of the election, unconfirmed report alleged that three youths, who had attempted to force their way into the venue, were shot dead and several others wounded by security operatives, who manned the entrance of the venue.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Hyacinth Dagala, however, denied knowledge of any killing and described the election as peaceful. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
