In what appears to be a set back in the reconciliation process in the Ondo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, a factional Chairman of the party, Dr. Olu Ogunye, on Tuesday formally took over at the party’s secretariat along Oyemekun Road, Akure.
Although his predecessor, Ebenezer Alabi, had resigned to pave the way for a proper reconciliation of the two factions, the refusal of other members of the old PDP to key into the truce brokered by the leaders at the national level rubbished all agreements reached.
Apparently drawing inspiration from a recent court injunction which gave recognition to the faction, Ogunye told journalists at a press conference on Tuesday that he was out to reposition the party.
He said Governor Olusegun Mimiko and his supporters should respect the Constitution of the party, as his faction would not accept any illegality.
He said, “We are ready for reconciliation, all of us own this party, this party does not belong to anybody personally, nobody can come and impose his wish on us.
“We fought for this party both at home and abroad, Mimiko can not come to PDP to become an impediment to the progress and development of our party.
“We are always open to reconciliation but one thing we will not subscribe to is hijacking of the party structure by the governor. We have all worked for the development of the party but we resist any imposition and dictation from the governor.
“We will always see them as part of us and they will be accommodated as part of us, they’ve come to join our party and cannot push us out of the party. ”
He rejected the sharing formula earlier reached between the two groups, saying Mimiko had nothing to worry about as the party would always protect his administration even at the House of Assembly.
The new chairman commended the immediate past Chairman of the party, Hon. Ebenezer Alabi for giving a good fight and protecting the interest of the members before he finally opted to resign as the Chairman of the party last month.
