PDP convention causes serious traffic jam in FCT

There was serious traffic jam on Wednesday in the Federal Capital Territory as all the access routes leading to the Eagle Square, Abuja, were shut down for the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Security personnel blocked all the roads to the Eagle Square, venue of the PDP convention, located in the Central Business District and directed motorists to use alternative routes.

The blockade of part of major roads like Shehu Shagari Way and Sodeinde Avenue, among others, led to a heavy traffic jam as vehicles clogged other roads.

The blockade also put pressure on commuters who were forced to wait endlessly for commercial buses, which were caught up in traffic in other parts of the city.

Men of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Police and other security personnel were deployed in strategic junctions and roads close to the Eagle Square to keep away unaccredited persons from accessing the venue of the PDP convention.

Hundreds of party delegates had swooped on the Eagle Square for the convention, where President Goodluck Jonathan’s candidature for the 2015 election would be ratified as the sole aspirant.

Some party supporters who were not accredited for the event were seen loitering around the National Mosque, where they were confined by security operatives.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Peter Okechukwu, urged residents to bear the inconvenience of the road blockage, noting that all the routes would be opened after the convention on Thursday (today).

“The road blockade was part of the security measures for the PDP national convention, I want to plead with residents to bear with us. All the roads will be opened as soon as the convention is over,” Okechukwu said.
