The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatude Fashola, has said the state’s judiciary is devoid of corruption.
Fashola spoke on Friday while hosting the immediate past Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Ayo Philips and her successor, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade, to a state reception at the City Hall, Lagos.
Philips and Atilade are siblings who became chief judges of the state back-to-back.
Fashola, while extolling the sisters, said that it was remarkable that Lagos State produced two siblings who had taken the leadership of the judiciary by merit.
He said, “The strong message that is being sent out is that all is not lost in Nigeria because the state has a judiciary that is not corrupt.”
“As we celebrate these women, we are also sending out a message to our nation that in this state and city, our integrity is more valuable to us than all our personal assets. We are building a public service that our children will be proud to inherit from us and they can one day look back and say, ‘Thank you for leaving this type of legacy for us’,” he added.
The governor, while referring to the just concluded governorship and presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress held in the state, said Lagos had also proven its worth in politics.
According to Fashola, the message being sent from the exercises is that the people can indeed take charge of their affairs.
He said, “The Lagos APC governorship primary had the largest number of candidates, but was conducted without rancour, as none of the candidates who contested has come out to say that it was rigged or that there were more voters than the number of accredited delegates.
“But as if that was just the beginning from Lagos, against all the odds, we have played host in the last 48 hours to a party’s national convention and primaries that were a model of democracy for the whole of Africa.”
Earlier, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ade Ipaye, had said the swearing-in of Atilade as the fifth female Chief Judge of Lagos State was of historical significance because Lagos was the only state that had had female chief judges back-to-back for five years.
Other people at the event were the Supreme Court Judge, Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN); National Legal Adviser of the APC, Dr Muiz Banire, judges, lawyers and relatives of the honourees. The day someone can obtain a favourable ruling against the LASG in a Lagos High Court is the day I will believe the Lagos State Judiciary is not corrupt. At present, it can not happen so Fashola should not pontificate.
