The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, yesterday donated N7 million to 14 wives of the 35 police officers declared missing in Borno, to alleviate their suffering.
It will be recalled that the officers were declared missing after members of the Boko Haram sect invaded the Police Mobile Force Training School at Gwoza, on August 20.
Abba, however, said one of the officers had resurfaced about three months ago and had resumed duty.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that each of the women got N500, 000.
Apart from the cash, the inspector-general also gave 20 tubers of yam, one bag of rice and one gallon of vegetable oil to each of the women and 84 other police wives whose husband had died in the line of duty.
Sixty-two widows of policemen that were ambushed and killed by members of the Omgbatse cult at Alakyo village in Nasarawa State on May 7, 2013, also got the foodstuff.
The inspector-general used the occasion to reassure that the search for missing police officers would be intensified until they were found either dead or alive.
“Those whose husbands are still missing, let me say that we are still pained, we are still hopeful and we have not stopped the efforts to trace them, wherever they are.
“And that, we will not relent until we are able to account for each and every one of them, this I want to assure you.
“Without mincing word and with due consideration to the status of my office, we mean every word we say, the search continues, the hope is still there,” Abba said.
The I-G also assured the women that the force would not forget them whenever it mattered, particularly at a season like the yuletide which was a time to share with one another.
Abba also said that the outcome of investigation into the incident, as well as that of the panel constituted by the Nasarawa State Government on killing of the officers by the cult would be implemented appropriately.
He described the incident as one of the mishaps that had affected the police in recent years. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
