Governor Chime presents N96.7bn 2015 budget

Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, on Tuesday presented the 2015 budget of about N96.7bn to the state house of assembly.

The sum represents a three percent increase, compared to the N93.7bn budgeted for the state in 2014.
Out of the amount, N54.9bn, or 56.8 percent of the budget, is set aside for capital expenditure, while N41.7bn is for recurrent expenditure.

Works and infrastructure received the largest share of the budget, with N14.9bn to be deployed mainly for the completion of ongoing projects.

In the same vein, N6.1bn was allocated to the education sector, while health and agriculture received N4.9bn and N4.3bn, respectively.

Also, a total of N2.9bn was earmarked to the water sub-sector.

Reviewing the performance of the 2014 budget, Chime said the government recorded remarkable successes in all sectors, especially in road construction and rehabilitation.

According to him, the 332 kilometres of rural roads constructed by his administration has enhanced inter-connectivity and drastically reduced the length of time it takes to travel from the rural areas to Enugu because all parts of the state can now be easily accessed by road.

Noting that the budget presentation was the last he would make as the governor of the state, Chime assured of his commitment to the completion of ongoing projects.

“When I took office in 2007, we visited all the 472 communities in the state and identified the key development needs of our people as chosen by them.

“The good news is that all the communities have had some or all of their chosen projects executed for them by government.

“We are committed to completing and handing over the various ongoing urban and inter-local government roads which are currently at various stages of completion,” he said.
The governor thanked the Enugu State House of Assembly for the support given to his administration since its inception.

He urged the people of Enugu State to vote wisely in 2015, saying, “Enugu State is so important to be entrusted into the hands of people with no clear-cut vision on how to deepen development and enhance the quality of life of our citizens.”

Receiving the budget, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Eugene Odo, noted that Chime had substantially implemented all the budgets approved by the House since the inception of the administration in 2007.

He urged the lawmakers to expedite the passage of the 2015 budget.
