FG shifts East-West road completion to 2015

The Federal Government has set the first quarter of 2015 for the completion of the East-West Road, linking Warri, Delta State, with Oron in Akwa Ibom State.

The Minister of Niger Delta, Chief Stephen Oru, said the project initially scheduled for completion in December, 2013, had to be shifted to next year because of inadequate funding.

Oru made the comment while briefing journalists on the activities of the ministry at the National Press Centre, Abuja, on Friday.

He said the ministry had achieved 81.3 per cent completion of the 338-kilometre road.

The minister disclosed that the Federal Executive Council added a fifth Section to the road initially divided into four sections, to cover Oron to Calabar.

He said the additional section, expected to ease transportation from Oron to Calabar, would be partly funded with a loan from the China Exim Bank.

He said, "Due to paucity of funds and the short dry season prevalent in the region, the inauguration of some of the completed sections (of the road) has been shifted to the first quarter of 2015.

"Presently, the overall project achievement stands at 81.3 per cent completion.

"The Federal Executive Council has just approved Section V of the East-West Road, covering Oron to Calabar in Cross River State; a distance of about 23.09 kilometres."
