Federal govt colleges have lost their glory - Education Minister

The Minister of State for Education, Professor Viola Onwuliri, has said that federal government colleges in the country have lost their glory.

She stated that the government was committed to enhancing the standards and learning environments in the schools.

She spoke during the 2014 annual general meeting of Principals of Federal Unity Colleges in Ilorin on Monday. The AGM was themed, ‘School safety in a contemporary society: issues, challenges and way forward.’ She was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. MacJohn Nwaobiala.

Onwuliri said, “You will agree with me that the Federal Government Colleges today are a far cry from their glorious past. We can no longer continue to allow them to go on a downward spiral to deterioration.

“It is for this reason that the merit-based system of selecting the best students was adopted in 2013/2014 academic session. It is our duty to return these colleges to the models which was the vision of the founding fathers.”

She noted that the educational institutions in the country had in recent times been confronted with serious threat to lives and property from insurgency to other forms of violence and communal clashes.

According to her, the situation disrupted academic life in some of the federal unity colleges, particularly in the North-East geo-political zone.

Onwuliri said that to achieve a more conducive and safe learning environment, the federal government initiated the Safe School Initiative as well as provision of well equipped structures with modern educational gadgets which include e-library said to have been recently constructed across the federal unity colleges.

She stated that this is in addition to world class laboratories provided by the World Bank projects STEP-B. She added that new teaching staff were recently recruited to address the shortage of teachers in the federal unity colleges.
