Christians celebrate in Jos amid tight security

There was tight security in and around Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Thursday as Christians celebrated the Christmas services in various churches.

Our correspondent who went round the city observed heavy presence of security, made up of mobile policemen and operatives of the Special Task Force on security, at strategic points.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nasiru Oki, personally supervised the policemen on duty while the Commander of the Special Task Force, Maj. Gen. David Enetie, coordinated his men.

The security operatives moved in convoy around major streets.

Oki had earlier organised a meeting between Muslim, Christian leaders and traditional rulers on the need to maintain peace during the celebration.

However, most of the churches were scanty as worshippers avoided crowded places that were likely targets of attacks by suicide bombers.

Worshippers stayed away from Christmas Eve services on Wednesday.

The spokesman for the Special Task Force, Capt. Ikedichi Iweha, told our correspondent that the whole city was calm but that his men would remain at alert.

“So far so good the whole area is calm and people are going about the celebration without any fear, but with caution. We are at 100 per cent alert as we have stationed our men at strategic places,” he said.
