If elected Nigeria’s president in 2015, former military leader, Muhammadu Buhari, will not immediately go after past leaders, politicians and officials, who stole the country dry and committed other offences, his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, said Monday.
Mr. Buhari will be more focused on solving Nigeria’s many problems left behind by the former leaders, APC chairman, John Oyegun, said.
“The first moments of a Buhari Presidency, the outlook is on the future,” said Mr. Oyegun. “The message will be clear, whatever you engage in before that is detrimental to the people of this country, please stop it, change has come.”
Mr. Buhari’s anti-corruption record as military leader is seen as his strongest credential as he seeks to challenge President Goodluck Jonathan for the top job in 2015.
With corruption at one of its worst levels in Nigeria, Mr. Buhari’s supporters project him as a tough leader who will not tolerate fraud, and who will be brave to bring past and present corrupt officials at all levels, to justice.
But his party
said the scale of decay Nigeria faces currently is so huge the retired general would be more concerned fixing them once he gets to office, than going after past treasury looters.

The party’s chairman, Mr. Oyegun, however said while Mr. Buhari would be willing to give officials who stole in the past a chance to mend their ways, he will clampdown on those bent on continuing with corruption.
“The only people I think should fear the Buhari Presidency are those who do not want change. Those who want to continue with business as usual are those who want to continue to profit from the level of corruption in the society,” Mr. Oyegun told reporters on Monday in Benin, Edo State.
“We will have no apologies for people like that. But it is clear that from the Buhari perspective and that for the APC, the future of the people of this country is too important for us to spend valuable time trying to dig into the past,” he said.
He said those who fail to change would be the ones to face the music.
“It is time for change and anybody who decides that he does not want to be part of change and want business as usual that is his choice,” he said.
The APC leader said it was untrue that a Buhari presidency will send Nigerians to jail, and accused the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of spreading that claim.

Like your godfather in Lagos.A bi? Who is fooling who?
ReplyDeleteAnti-corruption crusader my foot, how can u fight corruption when everyone around you are corrupt? How can u fight corruption without starting with the past leaders? No sinner must go unpunished.
ReplyDeleteWe want you to catch the past looters together with those surrounding you ( Atiku and Tinubu and co) and collect back those looted money from them, if you cannot do that there is no need of voting you in. I did not support you before but I want to support you this time because I want you to bring the looters to justice.
ReplyDeleteAre u ok? Didn't u here what they said or can't u read very well? This will tell u they will forgive all those corrupt politicians around them thereby telling us nothing like anti-corruption crusade. They will tell us they have all repented and will not probe them any longer.
DeleteWhere are all these APC soldiers? Come out and defend these senselessness in their campaign.
The devil we know.
Am I reading well? Is this coming from APC? Then why all the hullabaloo about fighting corruption? . If you don't probe past corrupt leaders, who are you going to Probe? Me or hapless and ordinary Nigerians who have no godfathers or money to buy their ways?. Thank God you have exposed your true intents, fighting corruption was just a smokescreen to deceive us while the real intent is to grab power and control the economy of the country. The change is just about who weighs power and not how things are done . for the sentimental followers of APC, Shine your eyes.We can be deceived any longer! For the moral thinking Nigerians, there is no change here. The devil we know..........
ReplyDeleteA very simple comment that makes good sense has just been made and you guys are playing politics with it. APC has just said that it is more important to Buhari that he spend his time on ways to stop corruption, which we all know he is capable of doing. The time and energy that will be used to go after past corrupt Nigerian will be used to fix other area of our country that are in dear need of fixing like security, infrastructure, education, job creation etc. Another angle to this comment is that those that know Buhari is the solution to Nigeria problem but because they have corruption cases may not want to suport Buhari can now put their fear aside and pursue the desire change by supporting him. Please lets not play politics with every comment.
ReplyDeleteYou will past corrupt leaders will get away with their loots? At this level of economic disaster, what is there to steal? Pls, this talk is getting to uncontrolled and unguided. Check the books, call for voluntary payback, punish those that refused and stop further corrupt practices. Pls get focused .
ReplyDeleteThe devil I know is better than the Angel I don't know, APC have nothing new to offer.
ReplyDeletethis Buhari is corrupt and a rotten leader if voted for will take us backward
ReplyDeleteOn election day, the wealthy & corrupt will line up behind Jonathan who will give them a niche; those worried about the state of the nation will line up behind Buhari; those who think that sharia will be imposed on everybody (even if it is not true) will line up behind Jonathan; and those who understand the issues and want to be truthful to themselves will line up behind Buhari. Then the counting begins, maybe. If I read the article correctly, what is being said is that initial energy will not be invested in going after those who have stolen from the nation. This is understandable since there are millions of these thieves from the past and from the present. But it must occur at some point, otherwise Buhari's anti-corruption campaign would have been in vain. Jonathan will never go after the corrupt, because by many indications, he identifies with them.
ReplyDeletePlease can someone list names of out past leaders?
