Blame Buhari for Lagos traffic – Minister

The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Jumoke Akinjide, says the people of Lagos State should blame the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj.Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) for the heavy traffic motorists face every day.

She said when Buhari was the Head of State between December 1983 and August 1985, he terminated the Lagos Metroline project initiated by the Alhaji Lateef Jakande administration to ease traffic in the metropolis.

Akinjide said this in a statement on Monday.

She said by so doing, Buhari truncated the opportunity of a free-flow of traffic within the metropolis and by extension, the economic growth of the South-West.

She said the countries that were nowhere near the growth attained by the South-West when the APC presidential candidate stopped Metroline project had since advanced to become world economic powers.

She said the Lagos metro rail line was designed by the Jakande government to facilitate transport within Lagos and its surroundings but was terminated when Buhari military regime took over.

She said, “The visionary Jakande administration had concluded all the plans to finance the project, putting everything in place for its successful execution. My father provided the legal frame work in his capacity as the Attorney General at the time, and the state government had deposited $50m after securing a $450m loan at six per cent fixed interest rate for 25 years.”

  1. Jumoke, So you have received instruction and fed lies from your father (Richard Akinjide) who has always camped on the side of the anti-progressives since the first republic. Your father has benefited and mortgaged the progress of the Yoruba people whenever the opportunity comes by siding against unpopular Yoruba preferences and you are a continuation and beneficiary of this traitor. Tell me or show the Yoruba people just ONE meaningful largess your father has left for the Yoruba people except betray them at every opportunity just like Obasanjo for personal gains. You are in no position to give us history lectures as your father is also part of the problem (by using his position and office as attorney general to twist the truth in favor of his benefactors at every opportunity) Omo ale ni e.

  2. It's like this anonymous has been paid by APC to castigate and rubbish every positive report that he feels is against Buhari, I have followed all his comments and His manner of language and they are all the same even when he changes the statement and post repeatedly.this is blind politics anything GEJ is bad but every thing GMB is good ,is this the type of government we want to see ,pls lets always say the truth and be objective, both candidates are human and have their failures and achievements, the past shapes the future, you never know the capacity of a man until you give him power and money, but for me ,we must never return to the cabal and mafia politics, the North has had the sway for many yrs let them watch and allow the south put Nig ahead,a military man can never and I say it again, can never be born again enough to become compatible with democracy unless we wish to change our system of government

    1. You must be a super human to know this anonymous writer. Keep deceiving yourself, though I hate foul language but the writer is saying the fact. The ship of the nation was actually sailing towards a big rock and her father was a key player in the whole drama. If you are old enough then you could not have easily forgotten the moon slide victory of NPN in 1983.

  3. You, PDP and GEJ always find excuses and push the blame for your incompetence to another person. If Buhari cancelled the Metroline project because of escalating cost in the midst of economic difficulties, what has the PDP led govt in the past 15 years done to ameliorate the transport issues in Lagos, except play Politics with the Federal Roads in Lagos by refusing to repair and rehabilitate the roads and infrastructure. You and your party (PDP) do not have the moral justification to cast aspersion on GMB. As Chairman of PTF he has done more in the few years on road construction across the country than your Party and benefactor in Aso Rock in the past 15 years in power.

    1. This Lying woman has failed to provide convincing reason for her lies. Please can someone tell these clueless politicians to engage in comments that will elicit common sense and academic reasoning. I'm ashamed of the quality of people in government! Are political appointments for only the Akinjides in a country of over 170million people? It's ridiculous that someone that can't manage a home is at the helm of national discuss. Wither Nigeria!

    2. Nigerite, I understand you opinion about anonymous's comments but I also want us to be logical. What is Jumoke's business with Lagos traffic. Before and after Buhari's time as Military, was there traffic in Lagos? I think her comment is politically inspired. Yes, the modalities for the rail project were already worked out but think about it- we got $450m and deposited $50m to be paid in 25years. For what? What happens to the remaining $400m? See what is happening on Lekki expressway. A common man spends almost 8000 a month on that road and minimum wage is N18,000. Again sir, we need to put all our thoughts together and be positively critical about issues at this time. What were Akinjide's contribution to the development of the state? This to me is like taking Lagosians for granted.

However, I like to advise anonymous 7.36am to stop this seemingly biased judgement and critique with reasons.

  7. Madam, you people like to manufacture and fabricate excusses for not doibg what you guys are supposed to do. Please you cabinetembers should stop these excusses and get to work. Even if Goodluck or Buhari is given 10 years, it will definitely be the same thing. You people talk too much. And it looks like it goes round, today its education ministers turn, tomorrow another ministers turn and it just continues going round like that or else you'll be kicked out. Go and do the work and leave the assessment to be done by the masses. All of you in this administration and just block heads. Always forming busy and Manufacturing trailor load of excusses. Nonscence people in Government.

  8. So Lagos metro lines project is the reason for Lagos traffic due to APC. I guess the federal government can take it up if they feel the governor isn't thinking to that direction cos I'm sure there's something called federal road or is there no traffic in PDP led states. PDP to me is like the head of a family that's always pushing blame on his wife and kids. They make it obvious that they have nothing to offer but to look for excuses.

  9. Anonymous 7:36, et al. The facts are there for all to see. You have just exhibited and shown how clueless you are with respect to the special status of Lagos that was a state as well as the nation’s capital at that time before it was shifted to Abuja. Let me educate you since you've shown a compulsive deficiency for history comprehension, Lagos by virtue of my earlier explanation, still has significant Federal presence in terms of structures, which “street walkers” like you fails to recognize: The Third Mainland Bridge, Apapa-Oshiodi express way, Lagos Badagry-Express way, Lagos-Abeokuta express way just to mention a few are all federal owned. Apart from the Third Mainland bridge which almost turned into a national deserter until outcries from Nigerians forced the Fed Govt. to reluctantly patch a few portions of the bridge. All other federal roads in Lagos have become a sorry state as a result of deliberate abandonment by the PDP led govt at the center (using these as a political banter against the APC led State Govt), However, you and your ilk who are Bootlickers, Gerrymanders, Monkeyshines, Tomfooleries, Lickspittles and Brownnosers who lack the capacity to see beyond the rims of their clouded glasses are bound to paint a rather different picture of the real situation. The end for your paymaster and puppeteer is come 2015

  11. Like father like daughter. Do someone like you suppose to even near government, if nigeria were to be a country where individual and family are accountable for their past. Is your father not the initiator of 2/3 of nigeria 19 states then was 12 2/3. Or do you think we will ever forgive him
