We won’t support Jonathan in 2015 —Northern elders

As President Goodluck Jonathan declares his intention to run for second term in 2015, leaders of the North, under the auspices of the Northern Elders Forum, have expressed their decision to support any presidential candidate presented by the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 election.

They expressed their grievances with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party over the automatic ticket issued to President Goodluck Jonathan to seek a second term in the election. This, the elders said, had prevented aspirants from the North from contesting on the platform of the party.

The national leadership of the PDP, including the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Council and the National Working Committee, had unanimously adopted Jonathan as the consensus presidential candidate of the party.

In separate interviews with our correspondent on Friday, the Deputy Chairman of the NEF, Dr. Paul Unongo and spokesperson of the forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, stated that despite Jonathan’s power of incumbency and the deployment of state resources at his disposal, he would not win the election if the region voted against him.

He said, “Our position has not changed. We don’t mind him contesting, but we are not going to work for him to become president of this country again because we don’t believe that we have had any president that has been so divisive; that has heightened religious tendencies, hatred, ethnic militancy, high rate of impunity and a tremendous amount of insensitivity.

“The majority of northerners and the majority of Nigerians will decide for us and for the APC. We are not into party politics, but the APC has shown respect and deference to the North by allowing the North to produce its (presidential) candidate. But the PDP shut the door, saying there is nobody else but Jonathan; that he is the best for Nigeria. That is a lie.

“If not from the North, let somebody else come to contest; we will support him.”

The Second Republic Minister of Steel decried the abduction of over 200 Chibok schoolgirls by Boko Haram on April 14 and that they remain in captivity over six months after.

He said despite the claim by the Federal Government that it had reached a ceasefire deal with the sect and that the girls would be released, the insurgents had continued to launch attacks and kidnap more people.

Similarly, Abdullahi stated that the NEF would carry out its threat to frustrate Jonathan’s re-election bid, as the President had failed to secure the release of the Chibok girls before the end of October.

The Presidency had dismissed the ultimatum issued to Jonathan by the forum on August 11, 2014 to produce the Chibok girls or forget about his 2015 ambition.

Abdullahi said, “We did not even put ‘if.’ He should just forget about 2015. We cannot support him for 2015 for whatever reason. What we said would only confuse those who doubt; we have never doubted his failure. We have always believed that the man is incapable of running this country.”

  3. The beginning of the end of existence for nigeria. I weep for nigeria 'cause she is gradually stepping into the abyss, I bleed for nigeria because 2014 is gradually coasting home to usher in the much revered 2015-the year nigeria will cease to exist as a nation. It's a pity that in all these madness - insurgency, political madness etc no body is thinking about the negative consequences of their selfish and stupid actions. I pray that when 2015 comes for us to go our separate ways we should not allow bloodshed to occur. In life their comes a time for everything -a time to be together and a time to separate. Please, separation year 2015, come in peace, separate us as many pieces as possible if that is the only panacea for "PEACE"

    1. Or what? You will vote for the north and be in a Ilorin situation all over the south west? Whilst the people that feed us break away? You will then know what your new found love with the north really means. Instead of enjoying free oil it will be free innocent blood. You think they call themselves born to rule for nothing?

  9. Northerners called for removal of Ihejirika when he was at the verge of wiping out Boko haram.......Your problem as a Northerner is not even the Boko Haram, your problem is just to make sure a Northerner becomes the next President of Nigeria forgetting that Northerners have been on that seat for over 30 yrs without having anything to account for........Everyone of you expects GEJ to clean the mess you guys have done in the past within his 4 yrs in the office not knowing he can't fix it immediately......The more your quest is to remove GEJ,the more you realized there won't be the name Nigeria again

  11. The south where our president is from produces the oil that has been feeding nigeria including the unproductive north for decades. If we votes for the northern elites will they feed us will their main produce of innocent blood? Given the choice I know who to vote for. The north ruled for decades and we find ourselves in this mess.

  12. You will not support Jonathan because he is not a northerner. As simple as that, don't give a dog a bad name to hang it, tell it as it is. I wonder if you will support APC if Fashola emerges, very funny bunch.

  13. Who cares, you voted for him or not, it is only God tha has the final say for Nigeria and Nigerians and not Northern Elders, it is only the will of God that will be done and not the will of man because the maker of heaven and the earth is not a respecter of anybody be elder, president, ex-president, governors, senators, name them etc..... He is above every other names and every human being existing on earth therefore, swallow your pride

  14. We the southerner will not Vote Northerners as President of dis country because for over 35yrs the ruled this country the end up looting our resources and stealing of Public funds e.g Late Genral Sani Abacha, etc. GEJ is not the one sponsoring Boko Haran in this country ask Northern Leaders to explain what they has done with Nigerian Oil blog money, apartt from sponsoring BH. GEJ is a Christian, do not paint him black with your Religion fanatic and extremism. Your brothers have stolen our resources to train BH and use them to destroy the North why accusing GEJ. Come 2015 Nigeria will be divided (we will vote for secession) instead of the Northerners to Islamize us with anarchy. Niger Delta Militant will come back as Boko Haran will lay down their arm..So keep your believe to yourself .
