Rivers High Court registrar kidnapped by unknown gunmen

A group of unknown gunmen on Sunday kidnapped the Chief Registrar of the Rivers State High Court, Mr. Leonard Adoki in his village in Amalem, Abua, in Abual/Odual Local Government Area.

The gunmen, who were masked and armed with rifles, had ambushed  Adoki before forcing him into a waiting vehicle and took him to an unknown destination.

It was learnt that the chief registrar was on his way back from the church before he was taken away by his captors, who had not established any contact with the family of their victim.

The incident, which occurred at about 3.30pm, caused commotion within the area as the sight of the kidnappers frightened passers-by.

While two suspects had so far been arrested in connection with the abduction of the chief registrar, no clue had been made available regarding Adoki's whereabouts.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, who confirmed the incident, also said the two suspects were currently in their custody for interrogation.

"I do not know his status in the society. All I know is that somebody was kidnapped at Abua/Odual LGA and was moved to an unknown place.

"Two members of the kidnap gang were apprehended by community members and handed over to the police. Community members tried to stop them from taking him away, yet he was whisked away to an unknown destination.

"Our men including the Divisional Police Officer of the area are searching the bushes for him. We have not been able to reach any of them on phone since then, but efforts are intensified to ensure he is released unhurt," Mohammad said.

Reacting to the incident, the Port Harcourt Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association has condemned the kidnap of the State High Court chief registrar.

The spokesman of the Port Harcourt Branch of the NBA, Mr. Angus Chukwuka, described the action of the kidnappers as an aberration.

Calling on Adoki's abductors to release him unconditionally, Chukwuka explained that the chief registrar was an easy-going man that did not deserve such treatment.

"We condemn in strong terms the abduction of Nigerians, more so that of lawyers and legal workers. We plead with those behind such dastardly acts to please desist in the interest of order, peace and good governance in Nigeria.

"Those in this trade should look for meaningful means of livelihood, engage in meaningful endeavours, work hard and pray hard, God will make a way for them. Nigeria is large enough and the resources in this nation is large enough for everybody to co-exist and find meaningful sources of livelihood.

"On the shoulders of lawyers rest the responsibility of the promotion of rule of law, enforcement of rights among others. We appeal to his abductors to release him (Adoki) unconditionally, unhurt and with immediate effect," Chukwuka appealed.
