PICTURES: Inside the new Akwa Ibom Stadium in Uyo set to launch today

The Akwa Ibom State Government will on Friday inaugurate a 30,000-capacity Ibom International Stadium.

Those expected at the event are President Goodluck Jonathan and his Ghananian and Ivory Coast counterparts.

The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umana, who said this in Uyo on Thursday, stated that the Ibom International Stadium will be one of the land mark projects initiated and completed by Godswill Obot Akpabio’s administration.

“The stadium is a two-tiered structure that includes a 400m-running track for athletic events, and is the pilot part of Uyo Sports Park development. It sits on a 36.3 hectares of land and is enclosed by a white triangular-shaped outer covering that encircles the whole stands.

“Its geometry is developed on the basis of a typical layout for multi-purpose stadia, with an arena with running track, and under consideration of optimal viewing for such sports as football and athletics.

“It is constructed to seat a little more than 30,000 spectators for soccer or track and field events. While the Grand Stand can comfortably accommodate about 7,500 spectators, including the VIP/VVIPs.

“Its East Stand and Curves have provision for approximately 22,500 people. The Governors’ Lounge is located in the Grand Stand on Level Two and has sitting capacity for between 30 and 40 VVIPs. Spaces to the left and right of the Governors’ Lounge are the VIP Lounges that can play host to 60 – 70 people,” he said.

He added that the stadium has two video boards with the screens placed under the roof of the curves at opposite angles (north and south).

He revealed that the running track has six irrigation taps to clean the tartan surface.

  8. I think we all need to get things right here! the question is Is Akpabio using His personal money to do all these? what was he elected to do? It therefore baffles me when we start praising a man that was elected to be in custody of our common wealth and work for us and he is doing so....to me he is just doing the job he's elected to do....why is he commissioning it now? to confuse the people so as to feel that he has worked throughout his tenure as the commissioning of the stadium will still be fresh in our memories....Nogerians, i think we need to wise up and demand for better services from preselected' governors whether in APC or PDP......God bless nigeria!

    2. Dude I have been in uyo when it was a bushy state..after Akpabio started putting things in place, the state is now a state to be proud of. Yes work still needs to be done in terms of employment, but the bulk has already been completed. Its left for d next man to follow through with what's in ground there and maybe add better innovations and employment opportunities for youths. Am not akpabio's fan but he has tried. Yes its tax payers' money but at least he used it well...praise

  11. The inferiority complex of this people knows no bound. Why the name Ibom International stadium. Every stadium is "International" so far you play matches that involve country against another country. This is not an airport which has to be designated Local or International by a constitution or Gederal authority. Mr Akpabio , pls take note.

      akwa-ibom-stadium.html

SMALL People like YOU irk me. You rub-off people the wrong way

because it is clear that you are not a good human being.

First of all, The term "International mostly means something (a

company, language, or organization) involving more than a

single country. The term international as a word means

involvement of, interaction between or encompassing more than

one nation, or generally beyond national boundaries" quote. To

put it in a very elementary definition for your comprehension, it

means everybody and every nation is welcome! How does

"INFERIORITY" factor in here? JFK International Airport in New

York City, Los Angeles International Airport are thousands of

airports servicing international travellers are all by definition international.

So, you think, we, the residents of Akwa Ibom State are

"INFERIOR"? Inferior to who? I am sure you hail from a tribe that

produced our first president with a PH.D in Philosophy instead of

in Proctology, (that created a false sense of "superiority" over all

Nigerians that also led to your catatrosphic eclipse in the same

nation due to your blatant deficiency in your tribal superego

function) because at least he could have help African people in

clinical areas instead of wasting bombastic English verbiage to

Africans who has no clue what he was railing about in his

addresses to the nation. Look at your State today and compare it

to Akwa Ibom State. The picture that emerges is a clear

indication of who is intellectually superior!

It is obvious that you have no comprehension of the dictionery

definition of :Inferior", I strongly recommend to you that there

are two dictionaries (1) The Oxford English Dictionary and (2) The

American Heritage Dictionary. Try to read them and I promise

you that you will emerge thinking "superior" in contrast to your

      present state of comprehension.

Where did you see "International" engraved on the billboard of

our magnificent stadium? You must have just jolted your

"superior" brain from stupor! Any person capable of reading

elementary Englisg would recognize the difference between

AKWA IBOM STADIUM and AKWA IBOM INTERNATIONAL

STADIUM. Where did you see that engraves on the stadium?

Even kindergarten students in Akwa Ibom State refer to the

stadium as AKWA IBOM STADIUM! How come a very "Superior"

person like you could not read same writing on the stadium but

has to wait to be embarassed on the internet? Excuse me, Dr.

Proctologist, you have to learn how to read because I will admit

that the most illiterate member of Akwa Ibom State is a whole

lot more intelligent and SUPERIOR than you and your degree in

strongyloide stercolaris! I don't need to heap insult on you

because you have done a very good job by insulting yourself

internationally. Next time you desire to use the word "inferior" to

any group of people, I recommend that you FIRST TAKE A VERY

CLOSE LOOK AT YOUR FOGGED GHETTO MIRROR. You

      have a f..king nerve!

Are you saying that New Yorkers, England and Americans and other nations that ascribed "International" to their airports' names are INFERIOR humans? If this is the mentality that define inhabitants in your State, who needs external enemies of progress?

Finally, If you think we are "INFERIOR" people, I recommend that you ask your mom! She can't forget! LOL! When a racist like you goes under the cover of the Internet to spew-out your racist vitriol on innocuous people, you must realize that those on the recipient end of your blind jealousy and antagonism have the ability to stimg-back!

    2. Infrastructure developments precedes industrialization. That is exactly what Dr. Akpabio is doing for his people who have been ignored by the waning so-called ruling groups for generations.

Every single project in the state has a maintenance contract assigned to it.
Dr. Akpabio is a very intelligent and astute physician/politician never seen in Africa! We are very blessed to have him!

  16. It is truly magnificient but we have to develop a maintainance culture. It is good to build these but more important to maintain them

    1. I was in Akwa Ibom State in 2013. My friend from Abia State drove us to THAT THAT THAT state! It was a total disaster and nightmarish state! Oh My God! You cannot sleep in that State with both eyes closed for fear of being swallowed by African python, roaches in your ears, mice in your mouth and you name it. Which begs the question "What is Gov. Orji doing with the State budget? Is he having ORGIES with it?" In the days of Dr. Namdi Azikiwe, it was all corruption. Broad daylight robbery of the Nigerian Treasury. Under Gov. Orji, It Is All About Corruption all over! The Ibos Have No Way To Run And Hide From Themselves!

  21. Cheap project at the end of tenure. The Minister of Finance has accused this Governor of spending only one percent of the state budget. Where is the rest. Akwa Ibom State could have built Abuja in 3 places. The Airport Road looks like a bush track.Blind people are praising a criminal.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The airport road is a wide dual carriage way, with streetlights and landscaped, Its a joy to ride on that road, you feel as if you are abroad on Akwa Ibom roads, Kudos to the gov. If youve ever been to akwa Ibom you would know this.

  22. Sometime we talk without reason. It doesn't matter your political view the fact remain Akpabio has tried. We have 36 states governors when u consider what the other 35 has done u can only appreciate what Akpabio is doing with akwa ibom people money or are u saying if he has done all these that u will arrest him? Come to rivers state and see what Ameachi is doing with rivers money, he's using the people money to fight the people. Akwa ibom was backward all round but now akwa ibomites can pronounce the name of their state with prIde. You can hide achievement weldon akpabio even the opposition respect you.

Just 1 term he dualized all LG road, build intl air port, e library, intle standard hotels, university, free education, intl hospital, intl stadium, and intl sea port on the road. Akpabio is a gold getter, he is living legend and a visionary leader. check out akwa ibom in ten yrs to come, u will shot up forever. Then u nknow what it means to have vision.

  24. I see that a bunch of blind, bush and hungry idiots have taken to praising any little crumb that Akpabio throws at them to lick his ass as the dogs that they are. How much million dollars went into Akpabio's secret bank account from the stadium contract? How many consistent jobs are created in AKS as a result of the stadium? Is Uyo the only place that requires development in AKS? What has Akpabio done at Etinan, Abak, Eket, Ikot Abasi, Oron, Ikot Ekpene, etc? You bloody idiots, the job of a governor, in any civilized place, is not to build stadiums, hotels and cinema studios; the governors job is to govern. (i.e. create enabling environment for private development). Like one commenter stated earlier, Akpabio and all before him are/were simply doing their jobs, be it as it is that this present governor is such a thief. He has committed a crime against the entire AKS people for all he has stolen and the people that he has ordered to be killed. We are so backward that we are quick to applaud mediocrity as though it is exemplary. Has anyone ever bothered to ask what the governor's salary is and how he and his family can get filthy rich in 8 years? Only in Africa and Nigeria can this blatant thievery go on with idiots clapping for the thief.
