The Nigerian Navy has assured that the era militants has gone as there are no more militants in the creeks of Niger Delta region, noting that militancy has gone with history as anyone caught with weapons will henceforth be treated as a criminal.
Commanding Officer, Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS Delta, Captain Musa Gemu, also assured that there was absolute peace in Delta waterways as against the wrong impression being postulated in certain quarters following threat issued by Ijaw youths of Gbaramtu Kingdom.
Gemu particularly appealed to Nigerians to cease calling former arm-carrying youths in the region as ex-militants or militants as they have been useful in solving several problems that would have resulted in fatal crisis.
He claimed that it was untrue for people to alleged that there is breakdown of peace and security following recent threat by Ijaws of Gbaramatu Kingdom who threatened to cause mayhem on the waterways should President Goodluck Jonathan performed the groundbreaking ceremony of the $16 billion EPZ project without according them their rightful place in the project.
“I want to appeal to Nigerians not to refer to anybody in the Niger Delta as ex-militants. The era of militancy has gone with history; rather they should be referred to as good citizens and we shall refer to them as Nigerians.
“Because there are many problems that has come up within my area of jurisdiction and we have solved a lot of problems that would have resulted in crisis. Anybody that uses weapons inside the creeks henceforth is a criminal and we will take decisive action against them”, Gemu stated.
The NNS Delta boss, who has been proactive in the fight against illegal bunkering in the region, also dismissed security threats to why Mr President has aborted his proposed visit to the state.
He called on stakeholders and the two ethnic factions claiming ownership of the land where the project is sited to maintain the existing peace in the area to avoid fresh communal crisis while the Federal Government resolves administrative issues.
“The Nigerian Navy is working tirelessly towards ensuring that the entire state is safe and free from crime. Those doing legitimate businesses within the waterways are assured maximum security. We urge the general public to report anything that poses threat to peace to the military for swift action,” he added Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

This statement is not surprising given the fact that it's a weekend. Very sure Capt. Musa was coming out of the Club when he made the statement.
