Presidency Thursday backed the Inspector – General of Police, Suleiman Abba who ordered heavily armed security operatives to block the National Assembly Complex where Speaker Aminu Tambuwal and other lawmakers were prevented from gaining access to the House to preside over the deliberation on the extension of emergency rule in the North-East.
According to the Presidency, the Inspector- General of Police was not only carrying out his constitutional functions in his capacity as the number one police officer, but also carried out the assignment to protect lives and property, just as it described Thursday’s incident as unfortunate.
Addressing Journalists Thursday, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe who noted that Suleiman Abba never invaded the National Assembly, but barricaded it said, “Assumption (on whether the police boss was acting on instruction from the President) should stop. The IGP is a very senior officer of the government and his duties are to enforce the law.
“He doesn’t need to get the villa to enforce the law. He is not a house boy. Though he works under the government but he is expected to defend the law. IGP has the duty to enforce the law. He acted in the discharge of his duty. The IGP didn’t invade the assembly. It is wrong to assume that.”
” The whole scenario at the National Assembly today as we witnessed is rather unfortunate. We wish that at all times; national interest should supersede all other interests including personal and political interests.
“From Government perspective, the overriding concern today is the issue of insurgency which necessitated the request by Mr President that the National Assembly considers an extension of the State of Emergency to give the Security forces the needed legal framework and space for a successful prosecution of the war against Boko Haram terrorists.
“It is our hope that the Honorable members of the House of Representatives will use the period of adjournment to resolve all matters so that they can resume to deliberate and act on issues of National importance.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

Who are my people you unpatriotic Nigerian. Where is decorum in jumping fence like common thieves. Where is morality in Tambuwal grandstanding as minority speaker of the house. Where is patriotism in their display. Could you spot any honour in the actions of our supposed honourable(s)?It is a shame to say the least.
ReplyDeleteGEJ should be left out the brigandage in the house. You must think again if you believe that PDP will sit back and watch minority APC produce the speaker. It will justify the nonsense happening in Ekiti. Tambuwal is very unpatriotic. He would have been my hero if he stepped down after deffecting rather than throw the house of assembly into this kind of pandemonium. I agree that the police did not do well but lawmakers should know better that two wrongs can never make one right. It is unfortunate,
U are talking nonsense tell me where Tambuwal went wrong. Am not a politician and so don't belong to any party presidency should let d legislative alone after all we are practising presidential system of govt where dere is a clear seperation of power. I just hope Mr president and his advisers will not truncate dis Democratic dispensation.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous Nov 21, 1.08am u were very quick to react to this & also copy and paste this same barbaric sentiment -beclouded by personal interest and subdued by your hunger to eat fruits of corruption now and allow your generation to fester and suffer the results of your myopic and present gratification interest, on another news bulletin of NE.
ReplyDeleteYou are indeed shameless and have no values whatsoever. I percieve you are a youth & that even makes your situation a tad worse!
The time is coming when your ill-gotten wealth and high fences & exotic cars even with your escorts won't save you from the wrath of the people whom you continue to undermine with you ludicrous sentiments and comments.
That time is so so close. He that sows to the wind will reap..

I am yet to understand why our legislators take pleasure in embarrassing the already dented image of Nigeria with every slight opportunity. Tambuwal is not the first politician to defect so i wonder why his case is raising dusts...***even though i have my own concerns about carpet-crossing***...That said, it is rather barbaric the kind of kangaroo fence-jumping display that those opposition lawmakers engaged in...I am ashamed of our politics.
