Jonathan’s critics need psychiatric test – Okupe

President Goodluck Jonathan’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, said on Tuesday that critics of the President needed to be examined by psychiatrists.

Okupe said this while reacting to the statement by a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, in which the ex-VP raised the alarm over the activities of the members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, in the North-East.

Atiku had alleged that if the activities of the insurgents were not quickly curtailed, they could overrun the entire region.

He also berated the leadership of the country, wondering what it had been doing to curtail the criminal activities of the members of the sect.

But Okupe said such statements were not expected from Atiku, who the presidential aide said had been part of the system.

He said, “Those people saying that this government is clueless need psychiatric test. From now on, anybody who says this government is clueless should be referred to a psychiatrist.

“It is obvious that people are also trying to make mileage of insurgency. On Monday, a very notable member of the Nigerian leadership institution, in particular Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, took a swipe at the Federal Government and at the President.

Okupe
“You know, it’s difficult to comment publicly about people who have held very important and highly dignified position in our polity, but when people go to the extent of trying to make political gains out of national tragedy, it is difficult not to say something because this is part of the misinformation which the Nigerian public has been subjected to.

“Atiku said that we have problems with leadership, both political leadership and military leadership. For a former Vice President, I believe the comments passed by Atiku Abubakar, I don’t want to use the word ‘irresponsible’, but I will say it is a little bit out of place.

“It is not something you expect from an elder statesman, somebody who has been in the system and who understands how government works.”

Okupe, who said he was angry with the statement of Atiku, said it was wrong for someone aspiring to lead the country to speak ill of the armed forces because he would command the same military if elected.

He alleged that it was statements from people like Atiku that emboldened the insurgents to take up arms against the state.

“I remember very well that before the 2011 elections, it was the people like Atiku Abubakar who said that those who make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable.

“That was his statement and that was what poured out some of these young people who have been brainwashed to take up armed against their state,” he said.

He insisted that the government of Jonathan was doing everything possible to contain insurgency, adding that there was hardly any country not currently battling with insurgency.

Okupe said insurgency remained the problem facing the country and that government had been battling it and would overcome it, especially with the calibre of people serving in the government.

He also added that the present government remained the best since independence in 1960.

He said, “We have capable people who have made name running this economy; people like (Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun) Aganga; (Minster of Finance, Ngozi) Okonjo-Iweala and others and people are saying this government is clueless.

“How can these capable people be running an economy where the government is clueless. Is this possible?

“But I want to say here that Jonathan administration is the most successful since 1960.”

  3. Shut up Okupe. Your yoga allowed the insurgency to flourish erroneously believing that he will get political mileage. It was a miscalculation as he is getting the opposite.

  9. Very shameful, instead of reclaiming lost territories and protecting lives and property as the president has sworn, they are making petty talk. For crying out loud did Atiku coin that statement? Maybe Doyin Okupe thinks all Nigerians are totally ignorant, after all the statement is a fact of life. How can a govt in power for over five years keep telling Nigerians the same shit over and over ageing? Haba! Change your excuse for a failed govt na!
The presidency always accuse the opposition of being political on sensitive issues, when the same govt has refused any reasonable suggestions in resolving our problem, instead they cry wolf in order to gain poor Nigerians sympathy.
In as much as I will wish Atiku’s press conference on the takeover of the second largest town in Adamawa state is political, but is rather unfortunate that it is exactly what is happening in the region. I go to sleep every night wondering what the will be the fate of my people before I wake in the morning. The president and his cronies should wake up to their responsibilities and perform duties, which includes saving lives and property of every Nigerian or vacate the seat.
If only the presidency will accept theirs failures in governance, then our problem as a country is half solved. Atiku remains the only elder statesman who dares to voice our problems as they are, while others including Okupe-not that I regard him as an elder statesman o-Know the in their heart of hearts, but need to protect their interest.
Okupe statement is the definition of cluelessness, if I were in that auditorium; I would work cos this undermines every sensible Nigerians intelligence.

  10. I agree with Atiku: it is not news that Jonathan lacks the leadership capacity to tackle the insurgency.
The president's SSA must be daft to assume that Atiku's quote will instigate the insurgents to pick up arms. If truly Atiku is behind the insurgency as the presidency claims, so what is stoping them from arresting him or has Atiku now become superior to the president of Nigeria?
Please let's stop deceiving ourselves. The Boko haram insurgency has lasted this long because the FG allowed it; instead of doing what is needful, they were busy playing politics and playing blame game.
It is saddening if truly the Boko haram assault is because of electoral politics ahead of 2015.
It is a pity Nigerians have never had peace throughout GEJ tenure because his actions or inactions have succeeded in dividing the country: the North now suspects the South; Christians against Muslims.
If the present challenges he has succeeded in creating are too much for him to handle, he should give way for people who are prepared and ready to serve. Enough of this blame game and boring Nigerians with all his flimsy excuses, GEJ should just park well.

  11. NIGERIA HAS NEVER HAD IT SO BAD EVER. THE LEVEL OF INSECURITY, HATRED, DIVISION, MISTRUST, TRIBAL,REGIONAL AND RELIGIOUS DISINTEGRATION IS UNIMAGINED. Let us put away all these differences and salvage our land. Our God will heal our land, if we repent sincerely.

  12. My dear president, don't be carried away by this sugar coated singer/choir master assessment of your government.
Pls Sir apply this principle, "Inspect don't Expect". Get there yourself, identify with displaced people in the region . Imagine children, women, especially pregnant women, been forced out of their abode in the middle of the night!. It is totally wrong to pretend that all is well with the country all in the name of 2015 electioneering, while many are perishing.

As for this Choirmaster, don't trust him.
