Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, has declared that he was not withdrawing from the race to represent Delta South in the senate.
Uduaghan spoke on Sunday in Asaba, while addressing a meeting of the state executive committee of the Peoples Democratic Party attended by aspirants and leaders of the party at its secretariat in Asaba.
The governor said his ambition to go to the senate is fired by the desire to make oil producing communities acquire 10 percent equity of oil companies operating in their areas.
The governor’s declaration came on the heels of an understanding purportedly reached between serving PDP senators and President Goodluck Jonathan that the senators would get automatic tickets to contest the election next year.
Uduaghan has been locked in a battle of wits with Senator James Manager, the incumbent senator representing Delta South over the ticket of the PDP. Manager has refused to concede the ticket to Uduaghan.
The governor said he was going to the national assembly to fight for the rights and entitlements of the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
He promised to pursue this agenda with vigour because the oil producing communities have a natural right to participate in the exploitation of their God-given resources. Their participation and profiting from the oil producing activities in their communities and to redress years of neglect and insensitivity to their plight by the oil companies.
“My desire is to ensure that the 10 per cent equity participation by oil producing communities in oil companies sees the light of the day, my passion is to vigorously pursue this goal. This informed the decision to represent my people (Delta South Senatorial District) at the Senate,” he said.
The governor said he has demonstrated the spirit of sportsmanship in the pursuit of his senatorial aspiration, promising to embrace his opponents should he win or lose as politics, to him was not a do-or-die affair.
Uduaghan dismissed allegations of imposition and manipulation of the ward delegates lists levelled against him by some leaders of the party, pleading with aspirants to shun mudslinging and falsehood as well as acts capable of inciting members of the party against one another.
