Health workers’ strike paralyses hospitals nationwide

The on-going strike by health workers, under the aegis of the Joint Heath Sector Unions in federal health institutions, has paralysed health services in hospitals across the country.

For instance, medical care was paralysed at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi- Araba when one of our correspondents visited the institution on Monday.

Although doctors and other senior specialists were on duty at LUTH on Monday, one of our correspondents who went around the major departments and wards of the hospital observed that patients were only being offered skeletal services as a result of the strike.

It was only doctors that were attending to patients at the Accident and Emergency units. The same scenario was witnessed at the Eye and Dental clinics of the teaching hospital.

One of our correspondents also observed that the Nursing Station and the Medical Record departments in the Out-patient Unit of the hospital were padlocked on Monday.

Some relations, who spoke to one of our correspondents, said although the management of the hospital had assured them that senior medical doctors were on ground to handle emergencies and other cases, they would rather take their patients away from the hospital, since there were no nurses to attend to them.

A relative, who refused to give his name, said his wife was on admission at Ward C1. He however said he would take her to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, based on the advice of her consultant.

He said, “My wife undergone a surgery last week. That time, the nurses had yet to join the strike. But since then, there is nobody to dress her wounds. The doctors are attending to many people. Her doctor said it would be the best if we take her to LASUTH, at least, till the health workers’ strike is over, so she can receive the other minor treatments there.”

JOHESU, whose members comprise of nurses, physiotherapists, medical laboratory scientists, pharmacists, occupational therapists, optometrists, dieticians, medical social workers and clinical psychologists, embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike on November 12 over issues related to appointments and relativity in federal health care institutions.

Other health facilities affected by the industrial action are the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi; the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute- Metta and the National Agency For Food Drug Administration and Control.

Meanwhile, the management of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric in Benin, Edo State, has sacked three senior employees of the hospital and suspended two others over alleged misconduct.

The officers affected by the sacking, according to the board, include Dr. Ambrose Lawani, a Consultant Special (Grade II); Mr. Theophilus, Senior Executive Officer (Accounts); Mr. Kennedy Oriakhi, Principal Pharmacist; and Mr. O.J Ugiagbe-Ogbeide, while the two others suspended were Dr. Charles Ikeji and Osadebemwen Morgan.
