A former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, was on Tuesday named as the chairman of the 24-member All Progressives Congress convention planning committee.
The committee was given the task of planning the convention as well as handle the election of the APC presidential candidate.
It has 21 days within which to deliver on its mandate.
While inaugurating the committee, National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun, said members of the committee were carefully chosen after a painstaking search, stressing that Nigerians were eagerly awaiting the party’s candidate.
Oyegun said, “You have all of 21 or 22 days, which means that the challenge before you is enormous; which means that you are virtually going to leave this inaugural ceremony and start work.
“I want to say that you have been selected after a lot of agonising because the state of our party and the need for change, we need to have people who truly believe in change and by the way they organise and conduct the primaries.”
According to him, some of the party’s critics, especially members of the Peoples Democratic Party, have always said the APC was a party of strange bedfellows who cannot agree.
On the choice of Fayemi to lead the panel, Oyegun said, “We have given a very deep thought for every member of this committee; we found the choice of chairman particularly difficult, we were even looking for a retired judge at one stage.
“But, by flash of inspiration, it occurred to us that there is somebody in our midst who can be described virtually as white as snow.”
Oyegun also said that representatives of all the aspirants had been included in the committee as observers in order to prove to all that the APC remained committed to transparency.
He named Alhaji Kawu Baraje as deputy chairman of the committee.
Responding on behalf of committee members, Fayemi said each member of the committee felt honoured to be considered worthy of performing the task ahead.
He maintained that members were also aware of the fact that the way they handled the assignment would determine where the APC belonged, whether “those who are democrats or those who are monarchists.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
