APC replies Presidency: Chamberlain resigned as British PM during World War II

In what can be viewed as a response to a statement credited to the presidency 'Jonathan fires back at APC: 'No president resigns during a war'  The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the presidency needs a refresher course in history if it is not aware that a leader has had cause to resign in the course of a war being fought by his country in order to change the course of the war.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party reminded the presidency that Neville Chamberlain resigned as British Prime Minister on May 10th 1940 after Adolf Hitler forced the allies to retreat from Norway.

”According to available information, Chamberlain led Britain through the first eight months of World War II but had to resign after the Allies were forced to retreat from Norway, because of his belief that a government supported by all parties was essential for the unity needed to defeat Adolf Hitler. The resignation paved the way for Winston Churchill who later became the hero of the War,” it said.

APC therefore said the call by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on President Goodluck Jonathan to resign in view of the widespread insecurity in the land and the fact that some parts of Nigeria are now under occupation by terrorists is neither extraordinary nor unprecedented.

”The call by one of our leaders is about taking responsibility. President Jonathan is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. If under his watch Nigerian territories are being annexed progressively by insurgents, and all that he has demonstrated so far is sheer cluelessness and incompetence, it is time for him to take responsibility and quit in the national interest, to pave the way for a leader who can lead the country to victory,” the party said.

It said all the blame game and name calling by the presidency, targeted at the opposition, constitute a mere distraction.

”The presidency is right to say that when terrorists attacked the US in September 2001, the leaders of the Democratic Party did not demand a resignation of President George Bush but rather they rose in defence of the American nation to support the various measures taken by the President to defeat the Al-Qaeda terrorists.

”What the presidency forgot to say, however, is that Americans would not have rallied behind then President Bush if he had been photographed snuggling with any sponsor of Al-Qaeda as President Jonathan did with one of the alleged sponsors of Boko Haram in Chad. Americans would not have rallied behind Bush if 9-11 had occurred not just once but twice or thrice, because it would have shown that the President is simply incompetent to lead.

”President Jonathan watched helplessly as Boko Haram moved from Sambisa Forest to take over a large chunk of territory in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states and proclaim a Caliphate. President Jonathan watched helplessly as Boko Haram abducted and took away almost 300 girls, holding most of them for over 200 days….still counting. His Administration is even mocking and harassing those who are campaigning for the release of the girls. No people in the world will give such a leader unconditional support.

”Therefore, even if no leader in history has ever resigned during war (even though we have now proved that is not correct), nothing prevents President Jonathan from becoming the first leader to do so. After all, never in the history of any nation has incompetence and cluelessness been exhibited by any leader, as President Jonathan has done, when the country is at war,” APC said.

  2. This Lai Muhammad is very intelligent. May GOD help you. I did not hate GEJ and i am not yoruba neither am i hausa. Let the truth be told, nobody visit these Boko haram affected areas and feel same or support GEJ to even reach 2015 if he cannot do something except he is a member of the group. The opposition are saying do something, then arrest them if the govt has enough prove that they are the one behind. Security is everything. Some people sit comfortably in their home writing about what they never see forgotten that some citizen of this same country are pursued from their home presently living in the bush while the small children and the old that cannot run are dying under captivity. Every northerners whether muslims, xtains or strangers knows that the present Boko haram is not Ahmed Yusuf boko haram of 2009 neither is it northern agenda against GEJ. Jonathan and any citizen can contest and sworn in to run the govt if s/he win the election but what is happening recently under him is bad. PDP is a northern formed party and we still have many prominent northerners in the party and in the GEJ govt still supporting him, so nobody can plan or stage sabotage act of this boko haram magnitude for GEJ govt. He is only just incompetent. The people in these affected areas doesnt need anything now other than security. One should reflect how you would feel if armed robbers are in your house with helpless police arround, that is how these people feel everyday.

    2. Good write-up!! I am a Muslim and not just from the South, but from the South-south, I am not a religious or ethnic bigot as my wife is a Roman Catholic. I have nothing sweet to say about our President for his indecisiveness over the security situation in the the country as well as the high rate of corruption that is glaring to all yet cannot prosecute anyone.

  5. Chai, some history and moral lessons for GEJ and his cronies.
However its too late to resign now as that will lead to more problems. If he is a good person as he professes to be. He should just not run in 2015 Let another more competent South South person (if na by force it must be south south) take his place.

  6. Is a Prime Minister the same as a President? While the President is a Head of State in Nigeria or even in the USA, who is the Head of State in UK or Great Britain? Is it the Prime Minister or the Queen? While the PM in UK can afford to resign in times of war, it will be unthinkable for the Queen of Britain to abdicate her throne during a war. Read the history of Queen Elizabeth the 1st and the fall of the Spanish Armada. APC, make una dey do research before una answer oooooo!

    1. I'm responding to you because I see a lot of question marks in your writing. The Prime minister is the head of government and the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces. The queen/president is merely a figure head leader in a parliamentary system of government.

    3. You be original mumu. These are two different systems of government: the head of government in UK is the Prime Minister, equivalent to the President in a presidential system like ours and US. MUMU

  9. APC is the political wing of Boko haram so all their talks should be ignored. It started with Buhari and will end with him. Let them call their boys to order .

  10. Hello Mr. Jonathan supporter. Do you know the difference between ceremonial head and executive head of a govt. Take some civic class before you come up to make unsustainable claim.
