All state governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday boycotted a meeting of the Council of State convened by President Goodluck Jonathan.
None of them was also represented.
As of the time the meeting started at 11.30am inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, only Peoples Democratic Party governors were in attendance.
Also conspicuously absent at the meeting were a former Head of State and presidential aspirant of the APC, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.); and the embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo; former President Sheu Shagari; former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.); former Head of the Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan; and the President of the Senate, David Mark, are however in attendance.
The meeting was called, among other reasons, to review the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country.
While the President serves as the Chairman and the Vice President serves as the Deputy Chairman, other members of the council are all former Presidents and all former Heads of Governments, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria; President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives, all state governors and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
The council’s duties include to advise the President in the exercise of his powers with respect to the national population census and compilation, publication and keeping of records and other information concerning the same; prerogative of mercy; award of national honours; the Independent National Electoral Commission (including the appointment of members of that Commission); the National Judicial Council (including the appointment of the members, other than ex-officio members of that Council); and the National Population Commission (including the appointment of members of that Commission).
Council members are also saddled with the responsibility of advising the President whenever requested to do so on the maintenance of public order within the Federation or any part thereof and on such other matters as the President may direct. ReplyDeleteThis is a very good one coming from the opposition party members. At least for once in recent times, the country is witnessing a great deal of opposition from the rival party. The game of politics is becoming more interesting. I thank the Almighty God for opening our eyes. I wish to see more of that.
ReplyDeleteThat is not opposition; that is undermining the apparatus of state. When the National Council of States meet it is in the national interest and requires partisan politics to be dropped. The APC members conduct is unpatriotic and appealing. The precedent they are setting is that if they assume the presidency in 2015, all non - APC governors should boycott the Council of state meetings and activities of national importance.
DeletePDP! the chips are down now you want pity party. wait and see.

This is not true NE please confirm your stories before uploading to the public. Gov. Adams Oshiomole of Edo State attended the meeting and also held press briefing alongside Akwa Ibom Gov and Abati at the end of the meeting and he's an APC Gov. It's on TV and all the major stations aired it in their news (NTA, AIT & Channels). So it's unfair for you to claim that no APC Gov. attended when he was visibly present and actively participated in the press briefing aftermath of the meeting.
ReplyDeleteAm beginning to be afraid in dis country, can someone tell me if d meeting was called by PDP to solve PDP problems, was it called to strategize how PDP will win d next election?was dis not called for national issues?why would 99%APC Govs boycotted d meeting?on what ground?and Tambuwal too?nawa o,is opposition party opposing every single move to combat security threat?how would dis country move forward when some pipu are sabotaging d effort of all?its high time we met APC realized dey are d bad eggs in our dear country.
