Staff of Federal Ministry of Information, yesterday, protested at the Radio House over non-payment of their allowances.
The workers, who came out in their numbers, abandoned their duty posts to drive home their demand for the intervention of the outgoing Minister of the Ministry, Mr. Labaran Maku.
The protesters, who chanted songs of displeasure and blocked the gate of the ministry, told reporters that they were subjected to work under poor conditions, delay of promotion arrears, non-payment of repatriation allowances and selective training of staff.
The protest took another dimension when the Permanent Secretary, Folashade Yemi-Esan, arrived the venue of the valedictory section for the outgoing minister. The protesing workers began to call her names and rained abuses on her.
Speaking on behalf of other staff, Chairman of the Association of Civil Service of Nigeria, Ministry of Information Chapter, ASCSN, Mr. Adam Oghola, said: “The staff are angry because some of them have not been paid three months salaries and our promotions have also been pending.
“For us, there is a disconnect between the staff and directors of the ministry. The directors are part of our problem because the ministers and the permanent secretaries will always come and go, but the directors remain.”
Other grouse raised by the protesters was that of 100 persons approved for training this year, only 30 of them benefitted from the scheme, and wondered why it should be so. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
