The United Nations Children Fund has stressed the need for Nigerians to imbibe the culture of hand washing, saying it constitutes an important tool in the fight against Ebola Virus Disease.
The organisation also said every year, over 150,000 Nigerian children die from diarrhoea, largely caused by unsafe water, sanitation and unhygienic practices.
UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Jean Gough, said, “Nigeria has done well so far to contain the spread of Ebola. What Nigeria needs now is sustained promotion of hand washing. Let’s pledge to make hand washing with soap a national habit and reduce the number of Nigerian children who die from diarrhea annually’.”
The agency’s Communication Specialist, Media and External Relations, Mr. Geoffrey Njoku, in a statement on Tuesday in commemoration of this year’s 7th Global Hand washing Day with the theme: ‘Choose hand washing, Choose Health’, said “the fight against Ebola further underscores the importance of hand washing with soap in disease prevention and spread.”
Global Hand washing Day is celebrated on October 15 every year and the Global Public-Private Partnership for Hand washing with Soap initiated Global Hand washing Day in 2008 is endorsed by governments, international institutions, civil society organizations, NGOs, private companies and individuals around the globe
“UNICEF has been supporting the governments in raising awareness about Ebola in Nigeria as well as in other affected countries, working to counter misconceptions about the disease that put even more people at risk. In the fight against the spread of Ebola Virus Disease, hand washing with soap has been an important tool, an additional line of defence”, Njoku stressed.
