There was heavy security beef up in Adamawa State on Wednesday to forestall possible violent reactions to the Abuja Federal High Court ruling stopping the state’s governorship bye-election.
Hundreds of riot policemen were stationed in strategic parts of Yola, the state capital, as news filtered in that the scheduled Saturday poll had been halted by the court.
Sources gathered that the beef up covered the Yola International Airport, Mubi Roundabout, Police Roundabout, Jimeta Market, Government House, popular hotels and educational institutions.
Soldiers also patrolled major streets in Yola in an apparent “show of force.”
Investigations showed that though there had been police presence in the past few days, the number reportedly increased on Wednesday following the court decision.
One source informed The PUNCH that the police presence was initially in preparation for the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice-President Namadi Sambo to Adamawa State on Thursday.
Jonathan was to visit the state to address the final rally of the Peoples Democratic Party, where he was to present former Acting Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, to the people ahead of the poll.
However, with the court intervention, it is unclear if the President will still come to Adamawa State.
The source said, “Some political groups have been jubilation since 12pm when they heard the news.
“This caused anxiety in some parts of the town as people thought there was going to be fighting.
“The police quickly increased their presence in major locations. So far, there has been calm though.”
At the Government House, Yola, the former acting governor and some of his aides were said to have relocated from the seat of power. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
