Sudan 1-0 Nigeria: Super Eagles unlikely to qualify for the 2015 Nations Cup

Sudan's The Falcons of Jediane, fuelled by a deafening atmosphere and boiling temperatures inside Khartoum Stadium, brought down the African champions down to their knees with a fine display.

Sudan's First half goal was through a thumping Header. Nigeria chased the game for the remainder of the first half and the entire second Half.

Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations became slimmer as they lost 1-0 to Sudan in Saturday’s Afcon qualifier played in Khartoum.

A ferocious header by striker Bakri which left Enyeama no chance ensured the hosts got the better of the African Champions who put every foot wrong in the encounter.

The super eagles were second best to the ball everytime.

However, Nigeria’s best chance of the encounter came in the 10th minute as Nosa Igiebor’s effort rattled the cross bar after receiving a low pass from Emmanuel Emenike.

Few minutes later, the African champions failed to make their dominance count as goalkeeper El Moiz Mahgoub was at his best to stop Emenike who profited from the Falcons’ poor defensive network.

Sudan began to grow in confidence as they organized their midfield to threaten the Eagles’ backline. Elgadir's shot in the 27th minute could have been the curtain raiser but Kenneth Omeruo was well placed to clear the ball out of play.

As the game progressed, the Eagles’ frontline took their turn to miss glaring chances that could have put them at least three goals ahead going into the halftime break.

With less than four minutes to the end of the first half, Elgadir rose above the Nigeria defence to thunder home a power header that clearly beat Enyeama who watched helplessly in goal.

On resumption of the second half, the hosts tried to double their lead as danger man Elgadir gave the Eagles’ defence restless moments – in the process Efe Ambrose got a yellow card while trying to curtail the excesses of the Sudanese forward.

Even with the introduction of Emmanuel Chukwuemeka for Gbolahan Salami and Raheem Lawal for Ambrose, Nigeria failed to get the cutting edge as they looked disgruntled in terms of team work and tactical ability.

The reigning African champions are now placed at the base of the table in Group A with a point from three matches while South Africa with 2-0 victory over Congo away from home are ranked first with seven points.

Nigeria will welcome Sudan to Abuja in next Wednesday's match as they attempt to revive their now slim chances of reaching Morocco in January.

  5. Keshi's choice of players defies Common sense. This is someone who said that his former boss Westerhof is not a good coach but look at what he keshi has put himself and Nation to - total embarrassment. Why is it that most Nigeria cannot quit when ovation is Loudest?Rumor has started making round that he collects money from players before calling them to National team. Hard to believe though.I doubt it. But how can a coach worth his onions take players like Shola Ameobi,Azeez,Babatunde,Agbim,to world cup in the first place? Why must he always play Mikel? He has shown that he has nothing to offer and AFCON victory was a fluke. Make them sack this man joo! before he sack Nigerians oo! Which coach does not use his best legs and tactically he is no where too.He is also a bad man manager and this is disastrous for many coaches after all someone is the coach of Ballotelli and Suarez.. Please, sack this man.

  6. People will always praise you in life when everything seems to work in you favour even when you achieve result with unpopular decision.. when you take the best approach and fail they will say crucify him. A country of 170 million coaches where everyone knows everything about football, Keshi, what do you think?, time to bow out.
