Motorcyclist remanded in prison over murder of police man

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday remanded a motorcyclist, Lukman Bakare, 29, at Ikoyi Prison over the murder of Cpl. Joseph Ebosele,35.
Bakare, who resides at 20, Olajumoke St., Owode, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area in Ogun, is facing a charge of murder. The Magistrate, Mr M.O. Tanimola, ordered that the accused be in custody pending legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).
The prosecutor, Sgt. Cousin Adams, told the court that the offence was committed on Oct.11 at 11p.m. in Meiran area of Lagos. Adams added that the policemen on patrol apprehended the cyclist at midnight when he could not give satisfactory answers. They confiscated his motorcycle “He escaped on the way to the station. Following this development, the team leader of the policemen ordered the (now) deceased officer to ride the seized motorcycle to the station. “The accused saw the deceased while riding the motorcycle to the station and hit him on the head with iron.
“The other policemen on patrol took him to a hospital where he was confirmed dead”, Adams said. The prosecutor said the corpse was deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) mortuary for autopsy. He said that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 221 provides that a person guilty of murder shall be sentenced to death. The magistrate adjourned the case to Dec.3 for mention.
