The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, has said the party would reclaim the Adamawa State despite the court’s judgement ordering the swearing-in of the state deputy governor, Bala Ngilari, as new governor.
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had on Wednesday ordered that Mr. Ngilari be sworn in to complete the tenure of the impeached governor, Murtala Nyako.
The court also asked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, not to go ahead with the October 11 governorship election in the state.
Reacting to the judgement, Mr. Odigie-Oyegun said apart from the rigours of campaign the APC went through, the party is okay with the development because it would eventually reclaim the state from the PDP.
He said the party is confident that the ousted governor, Murtala Nyako, who is an APC member, would emerge victorious in the case he filed against his removal from office.
“By the ruling, the court has restored constitutionality. It has ruled that the deputy governor did not properly resign. That is stage one. The stage number two is whether the governor was properly removed from office or not,” Mr. Odigie-Oyegun told PREMIUM TIMES in a telephone interview on Wednesday.
“We’re awaiting the judgement on the suit the governor instituted challenging his impeachment and we are very, very hopeful we are taking the state back. I’m not the court but I’m hopeful. So, we are not unhappy about the judgement, the only regret is the stress we have gone through campaigning.”
The APC national chairman said the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, who later became the acting governor, Umaru Fintiri, was “greedy and over-ambitious,” hence he breached the laws to get Mr. Nyako out.
He stressed, “What happened was as a result of the greed and over-ambition of a legislator who decapitated a government so that he can become governor, in connivance of his party, the PDP.
“The breaches in trying to impeach the governor were so clear. It was a question of excessive ambition and the constitutional errors.”
Mr. Odigie-Oyegun said he was already at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja waiting to board a flight to Yola, the Adamawa State capital for the party’s campaign finale when he heard the news of the court judgment asking Mr. Ngilari to take over.
He added, “We had to come back as there was no point travelling anymore and now everybody who was in Adamawa for the campaign is being recalled.”
