Former Nigeria goalkeeper Peterside Idah has voiced out his disappointment at the Super Eagles 3-2 defeat against Congo in Saturday’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying encounter played at the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
Efe Ambrose had put the hosts ahead in the 13th minute before Prince Oniangue and Thierry Bifouma inspired the visitors to a famous win despite Gbolahan Salami’s launching a comeback with an 89th-minute goal.
Reacting to the outcome of the game, Idah, said the Congolese were the better side and deserved their victory while taking a swipe at the Eagles for undervaluing their opponents.
“This is actually humbling but that is the beauty of football where any team can win. Again, big congratulations to Congo. I think they were the better side,” Idah said on Super Sport.
“They wanted the game better than the Nigerian side. I think overconfidence killed us (Super Eagles). They thought they could make a mince meat of the Congolese but they got the shock of their life.
“With this result, the group is wide open for any team to qualify,” he concluded.
Stephen Keshi’s men will be hoping to bounce back from this embarrassing defeat as they will be gunning for a win against South Africa in their next qualifier on Wednesday. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
