PDP defeats APC, wins Niger East Senatorial by-election



After a long wait at the collation centre in Minna, the Independent National Electoral Commission in the early hours of Sunday declared Dr. Shem Nuhu Zagbayi of the Peoples Democratic Party winner of the Niger East Senatorial bye-election.


The Returning Officer for the election, Prof Wole Moreniekeje, who announced the result said that Zagbayi polled 92,056 votes against Barrister David Umaru of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 87, 405 votes.

While Isa Bello of All Progressive Grand Alliance and Mr Abdulahi Diko of Social Democratic Party scored 2,185 and 419 votes respectively.

Moreniekeje said total number of registered voters is 149,851 and total number of accredited voters who participated in the election stands at 205,765.

He said total number of valid votes is 182,137, number of rejected votes 8,042 and total number of votes cast during the exercise is 190,179.

He said, “We have come to the conclusion of the collation, I Prof. Wole Moreniekeje hereby certify that I was the returning officer for Niger East Senatorial District bye-election held on the 6th day of September 2014.

“That the election was contested, that the candidates received the following votes; Barrister David Umaru, APC 87, 405, Isa Bello of APGA, 2, 185 votes, Dr. Shem Nuhu Zagbayi of the PDP scored 92056 votes and Abdulahi Diko of the SDP scored 419 votes.

“That Dr. Shem Nuhu Zagbayi of the PDP having certified the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes is hereby declared the winner. And is returned elected, signed by myself the returning officer.”

  1. Waoh! The number of registered voters (149,851) is less than the number accredited (205,765)! How come! 149,851 registered but 190,179 voted and again 182,187 votes were adjudged valid! WHEN WILL WONDERS END WITH THE ARITHMETIC PUZZLE OF NIGERIAN ELECTIONS?

  2. Given the figures as indicated above, the number of those accredited and also, those that voted were more than those that registered! ARE WE SAFE?
