Jonathan arrives Nairobi for AU meeting on security

President Goodluck Jonathan has arrived Nairobi, Kenya ahead of the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting.

It was learnt that President Jonathan’s plane touched down at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kenya at exactly 8pm local time (6pm Nigerian time).

The meeting is to take place on Tuesday at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi.

Major issue on the agenda of the council is the insurgent activities of the Islamic fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram in Nigeria and similar violent activities taking place in Mali.

Earlier in May, President Jonathan and other African leaders had engaged in talks on the security issue in Pretoria, South Africa.

The meeting of the council on the same issue is said to be a follow-up to the earlier talks in Pretoria.

The council, comprising 15 member states, will receive and consider the report of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa.

It is expected that deliberations at the meeting and the adoption of the chairperson’s report will lead to more joint actions by the Nigerian and other African countries against insurgency in the country.

The council will also consider the implementation of the operational conclusions of the 5th meeting of heads of intelligence and security services of Sahel-Saharan countries, held on May 19 and 20 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

President Jonathan is expected to return to Abuja at the end of the meeting later on Tuesday.

In his entourage are Minister of State for Foreign Affairs II, Nurudeen Mohammed, and National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), among others.
