FG distributes relief materials to Boko Haram victims

President Goodluck Jonathan has begun the distribution of relief materials to the Internally Displaced Persons in the North-East by the Boko Haram insurgency.

The Federal Government has, at various times, donated relief materials to the area, but the present intervention is expected to get to every affected victim of insurgency in the troubled area.

The commencement of the distribution was performed on behalf of the President by the Minister of State for Power, Alhaji Muhammad Wakil, on Saturday.

He emphasised the determination of the Federal Government to bring to an end the security problem in the region. He also said the Government was determined to end the outage in Borno State while thanking the people for their patience.

In Borno, the relief materials stockpiled in the Central Store, Maiduguri, were handed over to the local committee that was set up by the IDPs themselves alongside the Borno State Government.

The distribution of the relief materials is expected to be carried out by the local committee and presidential committee under the leadership of Bashir Madugu and will be supervised by the officials of NEMA.

The Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Muhammad Sani Sidi, who is the chairman of the committee, said the exercise was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to ensure that the overwhelming numbers of IDPs were catered for.

He stated that the exercise took off simultaneously in the three states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa under the state of emergency as a result of activities of Boko Haram insurgency.

He promised that the distribution would be sustained while noting that the agency had registered more than 58,000 persons in four camps in Maiduguri alone aside those staying in host communities.

He said the relief supply was adequate to cater for all the displaced persons.

“There are many people who have been displaced, but are not currently staying in the camps; they are living in the host communities and these ones would be identified and supported,” he said.
