President of the Nigeria Medical Association, Dr. Kayode Obembe resigns over strike suspension controversy

President of the Nigeria Medical Association, Dr. Kayode Obembe, has resigned from office.

Obembe in a statement on Friday, maintained that he stood by his action to suspend the nationwide strike which his members embarked upon since July 1.

The Ex-NMA boss, in his three-paragraphed letter, however, appeared to have been frustrated out of office.

The letter reads, “There has been a request for clarification about the two postings from NMA secretariat, on the NMA blog.

“I want to make it categorically clear that I stand by every letter of the document I signed – That the strike was suspended.

“And since upon my integrity and honour, I cannot continue to drive the doctrine of ‘strike continues’, I hereby tender my letter of resignation as NMA president.

“What I have written, I have written.”

It will be recalled that Obembe in a communique signed by him on Thursday, announced the suspension of the NMA’s nationwide strke with immediate effect.

The communique which was issued after the group’s Emmergency Delegate Meeting held in Abuja cited the recent outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease, as part of the reasons for its action.

Obembe also said the need to attend to victims of insurgency especially those affected by the incessant bomb blasts, also informed its decision.

Besides, the doctors acknowledged the personal intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan, on the matter, since the strike started on July 1.

It also noted that the Federal Government has met most of its 24 demands and issued about 10 circulars on the matter in the last one month.

It further noted that the government has promised payment of its relativity and skipping within the next four working days.

The communique reads in part; “Due cognizance was taken off the efforts of the Senate, House of Representatives, Governors, Ministers and top government officials in resolving the problem.

“The pains, pangs, groans and cries of 170 million Nigerians cannot continue to be ignored.”

  1. Dr Obembe, is one of the few rare Nigerians who still believe in their honor and standing by it (Integrity) which is becoming very scarce among our people.

It is now obvious that the NMA have no iota of regard for the Hippocratic oath and the sanctity of life which they have sworn to uphold.

  2. what is honour? it is so obvious he was bought. NMA is not one man. An individual can't call off a strike. Govt should stop divide and rule tactics. it will always fail.

  4. Fellow Nigerians, is it not time we stop these criminals among us calling themselves politicians from dividing us? Corrupt leadership has defined a divide and rule tactic through wasting our Allah given resources to ruin this great country. The leadership has succeeded in making some of us believe there is nobody in Nigeria today that is honorable.

Even those women that put down their lives in fighting for the release of Chibock girls were called names when they cried out that Boko Haram has started using the girls as bombers. Finally, all Nigerians saw one of the girls that were used in Kano bombs except the shameless politicians that were busy dancing at election campaigns.

Dr Obembe should be commended for his action even if his colleagues do not support him. And those that refused to follow him also can not be blamed because they are among the few brains that are giving Nigeria honor internationally today, and not those that are bringing shame to the country. Instead of the funding medical services and researches, the rouges among us forgot their past and now living above their grate grandfathers' standard.

  5. Dr. Obembe is integrity personified. Apart from having a solid moral background, he is a God fearing man. He is one intellectual that could be described as ''a man after God's heart''. Little wonder the fat and brilliant profile he parades today.
Dr. Obembe is not wealth oriented. Most of what he has he shares with the less privileged. He is the type of leader we need for Nigeria salvation.
Thank you Dr. Obembe. Unknown to you Sir, you are a mentor to some of us. God will continue to give you strength, wisdom and knowledge to forge ahead in life. Elder Dele Akinloye

  6. Let's assume that he was not induced. Let's also assume that he has no personal selfish interest in the matter. But as a thoroughbred, a leader worth its salt, why should he take a decision that has not been approved by other members of his executive? If he does not have liver for this kind of responsibility, why did he accept to run for the office? Why has he been sending disguised text messages to doctors pleading with them to return to work? Everyone knew the sender of "DOCTORS" text messages is a federal government apologist but no one knew it is the President of NMA that was behind them! It's quite a shame.
