A trigger-happy policeman who shot dead a teenager at Olomi area of Ibadan, yesterday, was almost lynched by irate youths.
As a result, the angry mob made bonfire on major streets linking Olomi area to the city to register their annoyance over the boy’s death.
According to eyewitnesses, the problem started on Sunday night when some security men went to a drinking joint at Olorunkemi area in search of alleged stolen service pistol.
During the confusion that lasted some hours, it was gathered that the security men fired warning shots to scare the people and in the process, a stray bullet was said to have hit the boy who was having dinner in front of her mum’s shop. He was said to have died instantly.
Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, said: “The police are investigating the incident and we assure that justice will be done.
“We commiserate with the family of the deceased and promise that if he had been shot illegally, the police(men) would not be spared. Meanwhile, all the officers in the team are currently in detention and being investigated.”
The development resulted in traffic gridlock which stopped all vehicles from gaining access to the area.
