Judicial workers under the aegis of the Judicial Union of Nigeria have suspended their about three weeks old nationwide strike.
The workers are to resume on Monday.
JUSUN suspended the strike on Friday after long hours of meeting between the union’s leadership and the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Emeka Wogu, as well as other stakeholders in the justice sector.
The workers had on July 11 embarked on strike following the failure of various state governments to comply with a judgment of a Federal High Court in Abuja which barred piece meal funding of state judiciary across the country.
At the Friday’s meeting which held in the of the minister in Abuja, parties signed a memorandum of agreement with the union leadership before agreeing to suspend the strike.
The agreement indicates that JUSUN’s demand will be met in 45 days.
Others who attended the meeting and were said to have signed the the memorandum of agreement included Wogu, representatives of the fora of state commissioners of finance and state Accountants-General, the Accountant-General of the Federation and the National Judicial Council.
Others stakeholders who were also part of the agreements are the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Okey Wali (SAN), and the representatives of the Federal Judicial Service Commission.
JUSUN is demanding compliance with the judgment delivered by Justice Adeniyi Ademola of a Federal High Court in Abuja on January 13, 2014.
The judge had in the said judgment ordered the Accountant-General of the Federation to deduct the funds meant for the states’ judiciary directly from the Consolidated Revenue Fund and pay it to the NJCfor onward disbursement to various heads of court as provided for in the constitution.
