The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Adamu Mu’azu, has described those who left the party to join another political party as prodigal sons, who will soon return.
Mu’azu said there was no way those who left the party would not return because of the transformation going on in the party.
Mu’azu spoke when he received five members of the House of Representatives from the All Progressive Grand Alliance and the All Progressives Congress from Anambra State who defected to the ruling party at the party’s National Campaign office in Abuja on Thursday.
Apart from these defectors, others who defected along with them were three members of the Anambra State House of Assembly made up of one each from the Labour Party, APGA and Accord Party respectively.
Among the defectors are Uche Ekwunife, Afam Ogene, Cyril Egwuatu, Chris Azubuagwu, John Olibiye, Idu Emeka and Emeka Anahu.
Mu’azu, a former governor of Bauchi State said, “All the prodigal sons of the PDP who have either defected to other political parties or are in other political, parties are going to return to the PDP.
“For the privileged few here who have returned, you are as good as original members of the PDP. You are not new, you are as old as the old members of the ruling party you met there.
“The ruling PDP remains the most transparent, largest and credible political arty in the country. So, you are welcome home.”
Mu’azu told the defectors and others to realise that it would be wrong for them to think that they could get the party’s ticket to contest election with their connection with either the Presidency or the national leadership of the party.
“Those of you who think you can get the form because of your connection with the Presidential Villa or the national leadership of the party should please forget it because the power to elect does not rest with either of these areas,” he added.
He further advised them not to be what he referred to as “Abuja politicians”, saying many politicians thought that they could be elected by staying in Abuja and making noise without being known in their constituencies.
He said he wouldn’t have been governor in his state if he didn’t have the support of the people at the grassroots, and advised them not to remain aloof from the people who elected them into office.
“The day of reckoning is coming when you will have to go to these same set of people that you run away from when you think you have become a big man. They will still be the same people that will determine your whether you are going to return to your position or not, ” he said.
Replying on behalf of other defectors, Ekwunife begged the leadership of the party to allow her and others to contribute their quota to the development of the PDP.
She assured Mu’azu that the ruling party would sweep all elective political offices in February next year. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
