Why Oduduwa State must be created -Traditional rulers

Some traditional rulers from Osun State have given reasons why Oduduwa State must be listed among the 19 states recommended by the National Conference for creation by the Federal Government.

The proposed states listed by the conference to be created are Aba, from the present Abia State, Katagum from Bauchi State, Ijebu from Ogun State, Amana from former Sardauna Province, Apa from Benue State, Anioma State from Delta State, Savannah from Borno, Etiti from South-East, Njaba/Anim from Anambra and Imo States, Gurara from Kaduna, Ghari from Kano State, Adada, New Oyo from Oyo State, Orachi from Rivers State, Ogoja from Cross River State and Kanji from Kebbi and Niger States.

But the traditional rulers, in their memo to the leadership of the conference, said it would amount to injustice if states were created in the country without acceding to their demand.

The traditional rulers are the Owa Omiran of Esa-Oke, Oba Adeyemi Adediran; Oljudo of Ido-Osun, Oba Aderemi Adedapo; Alagbon Agbonbiti, Ona Iteade Adewuyi; Apetu of Ipetumodu, Oba Adedokun Adefoke and Laroka Wanikin, Oba Kole Ojutalayo.

Apart from these traditional rulers, those who also signed the memo included a former Minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Bashir Awoyorebo; President, Ife Development Board, Prof. Mushed Opeloye, and Prince Gbenga Omiwole.

The memo read in part, “It is gratifying to note that the national conference has announced the creation of additional 18 states for the country two of which are announced for the three South-West out of the intended three.

“The two announced are New Oyo and Ijebu States. It is disheartening to note that the proposed Oduduwa State is yer to be listed despite the fact that it is on the memorandum submitted by the National Association of State Movement and Oduduwa State Movement to the confab.

“It is pertinent to recall here that, the request for state recreation from the old Ouo state in 1983 included among others, Oduduwa and Osun States.

“While the then proposed Osun state included Ede, Ejigbo. ife louden, Ila, Irepordun,Osogbo, Iwo and Ododo Orin areas, the then proposed Oduduwa Sate had Atamumosa, Ayedaade, Ife Central, Ife North. ife South, Irewole, Isokan, Oriade and Obokun.

“Unfortunately, the debates on state creation at the Nationa, Assembly were brought to an abrupt end by the military intervention.”

They recalled in the memo that the clamour for the creation of the state made the people of the proposed state to also submit a memorandum in 1995 and 1996, demanding its creation.

Apart from this, they added that in 2009, the Osun Council of Obas examined the agitation for the creation of the new state out of the present Osun State and found it desirable and justifiable.

They said the council was also satisfied that both the new state and what would be left in the existing Osun State would be economically viable and sustainable.

“The historical significance of Oduduwa as the progenitor of the Yoruba race and of Ile-Ife as the cradle of Yoruba in Nigeria and father diaspora are some kf the compelling reasons for the endorsement by the Council’s ll for the creation of a new state to be called Oduduwa State,” the memo added.
