No bombs found in Abia -Police

The Abia Police Command has refuted media report of the discovery of bombs allegedly planted at Ohafia by herdsmen, describing the report as false and magnified rumour.

A statement by Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna, in Umuahia, on Friday stated, "There were no bombs or Improvised Explosive Devices found in Abia."

It alleged that the report was intended to create unnecessary tension and confusion in the state.

The statement reads in part, "The truth is that there was a bomb scare along Asaga Road in Ohafia on Thursday, July 3, 2014, but following the report, the Bomb Disposal Unit of the Police Command was drafted to the scene where the suspicious object was discovered to be textile materials (rags) packed in a polythene bag suspected to have fallen off from a motorcycle and trapped by a fallen high tension electric wire."

Urging members of the public to disregard the report, police, however, said the scare was in line with the command's appeals to people to promptly report any suspicious objects or persons in their vicinity.

Police, therefore, urged residents to go about their businesses without panics, assuring the people of their readiness to contain any security challenge(s) in the state.

A publication had reported that bombs were uncovered around the country home of Nigeria's High Commissioner to Canada, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, on Thursday, allegedly after some herdsmen passed through the area.
