The Nigeria Police Force says it has placed a ban on the issuance of licences for fresh arms acquisition until after the 2015 general elections.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Frank Mba, said this on Monday during a press briefing at the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Adeniji-Adele Street, Lagos Island, Lagos.
He said this action by the police became necessary to guard against arms proliferation as the country approached the 2015 elections.
He said, “The Inspector-General, Muhammed Abubakar, has placed a ban on the issuance of licences for fresh arms acquisition until the 2015 general elections are over. This action is designed to actually halt further acquisition of firearms, by both the politicians and the citizens.
“We are also increasing surveillance on our borders. The Marine Police and Border Patrol Units have been repositioned to man our entry and exit points.”
On the case of the Ejigbo torture, Mba added that the police had not charged the suspects with murder, as widely expected because the police had yet to find evidence for such.
“On the Ejigbo issue, the Federal SARS have made a lot of progress. Ten suspects have been charged to the Lagos State Magistrate’s Court, Igbosere. The case file was also forwarded to the Lagos State Department of Public Prosecutions. The police have not charged them with murder because our detailed investigations even took us to Benin Republic where we interacted with Juliana’s relatives and the traditional ruler over there.
“Both said that Juliana is still alive. As investigators, we are leaving our doors open, but we will not make a mockery of our investigations by charging them with murder when there is no death certificate or post-mortem evidence for Juliana’s death,” he said.
