GOOD OR BAD?: Nigeria and the politics of rice sharing

Nigerian  elections and the concept of rice sharing ahead of  elections is not a new development in our society, but it is becoming even more popular as we approach 2015.

Nigerian politicians have doubled efforts in distributing branded bags of rice to hundreds and thousands of poor masses, many who find it difficult to eat a meal per day.

EKITI: Hundreds of electorates queue to collect rice

Personally, i believe that in partisan politics, politicians and political parties are supposed to approach the electorate with challenging idea, manifestos and with the intention to bring change to the state or country.

Normally, any free and fair election should show the assessment of what the people think and how people behave.

Eat Rice and vote for me

But the introduction of the politics of rice sharing in the Nigerian political system, it's hard to tell if the electorate voted based on inducement with money and most especially rice, to satisfy his/her immediate needs. Consequently the 'hungry electorate'is short-sighted, the victim (The electorate) worry about the immediate needs of having rice for breakfast, lunch or dinner, than to vote a leader who will build good roads, improve health care faciulities, build schools, hospitals, and improve the general standard of living.

Many Nigerians fail to take lessons from the past, how many times have you collected N500 and a bag of rice, and have regrets for the next 4 years? (in most cases 8 years)

  2. When other people describe us as ignorant and uncivilized, we take offence to it. But those words correctly describe what we are........very ignorant! You sell your vote for a cup of rice, how much more ignorant can you be. Let's stop fooling ourselves, we are an ignorant people!

  3. The believe of most Nigerians that Ekiti is a home of the intellects, the last election in Ekiti showed otherwise, as it was claimed that Fayose was elected because his ability to attend to the immediate needs of people as oppose to Fayemi's philosophy of future development. i cant believe the Ekiti people sold there political and democratic rights because of rice that might finish in a fortnight.however if so,the people should be ready to enjoy the hardship after fortnight

  6. Whoever collect rice from politician to vote for him will remain poor forever. That is why they dont fight poverty bcos they know if people are not hungry it will be very easy to induce them with rice. God will destroy all their ill gotten wealth.
