The Numana Community of Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State, said they have lost over 138 family members and kinsmen to attacks by Fulani herdsmen in Sanga Local Government Area of the state between June 23 and 28,2014.
The chiefdom said Fulani gunmen have attacked and unleashed mayhem on several Numana villages including Kabamu, where 20 persons were killed, and Ankpong where 17 lives were taken, as well as Ungwar Haruna, Dogon Daji, Ambe Sarki, Gobir, Ungwar Pah II, and Kobin.
The National President, Numana Community Development Organisation, Sunday Audu who said this at a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, explained that hundreds of houses were torched and destroyed, including food reserves during the attack.
Audu claimed that many people are still missing and have not been seen since the attacks started, adding that the Fulani gunmen had been marching from village to village unchallenged, killing and maiming people and destroying crops worth millions of naira.
He said that though the security agencies were trying their best, but more measures needed to be taken to curb the murderous activities of the gunmen and further avert the loss of lives and wanton destruction of properties.
The Numana elder said that his people were not being given adequate protection by the government and appealed to the state government and to President Goodluck Jonathan to take necessary measures to stop the bloodshed in Numana chiefdom.
He also called on the government to rehabilitate the displaced persons now taking refuge in the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, and Plateau States.
Audu said, “Terror has befallen Numana chiefdom and it started in the midnight of June 23,2014 when Fulani gunmen in their hundreds unleashed terror and mayhem in Kabamu village in Fadan Karshi District and Ankpong village in Nandu District, killing 20 and 17 persons respectively.
“So far, the death toll is 138 and as we speak, many people are still missing and have not been seen since the incident started, it is possible that they might have been killed. The Fulani gunmen marched from village to village unchallenged, setting cattles loose in the farmlands, destroying crops worth millions of naira.”
The Numana community leader urged his kinsmen to remain calm and pleaded with them not to take the law into their hands, noting that the Government is trying its best to stop the unprovoked and wanton destruction of lives and properties.
