Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned against the excessive use of power by the PDP-led federal government, a tendency he said was not good for decent democratic practice.
Atiku, who was reacting to the controversial impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, said in a statement issued by his media office in Abuja that wielding the axe of impeachment against elected public office holders to settle scores by the PDP-led federal government would needlessly build up tension in the country.
The former Vice President said the reckless use of impeachment to settle scores could not have been the intention of the framers of the 1999 Constitution.
He said the frequency with which elective officials were being shot down by impeachment would destroy the whole purpose of inserting the impeachment clause in the Constitution.
He regretted that the use of impeachment to harass and humiliate perceived opponents by the PDP-led federal government would ultimately bastardize the spirit in which the constitution provides for the impeachment clause.
The former Vice President admonished the PDP-led federal government to take it easy in the way they use power, adding that the constitution was not meant to provide ammo to anybody to harass and humiliate opponents or force them out of office.
He criticized the use of financial inducements to influence the removal of perceived opponents from office.
According to him, triumphalism in the suppression of opponents is a bad omen for democracy. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

ReplyDeleteWe shall see 2015 how minority from the creek will manover the majority with force and not persuation.
ReplyDeleteThe law makers were paid #10m each for the impeachment, what a worst nation.
ReplyDeleteStory story, story. That means the ACN lawmakers in Lagos State who on the instigation of Tinubu impeached Kofowora Bucknor and Femi Pedro both of whom were deputy governors to Tinubu were paid by ACN. Tell that to the marines.
DeleteA worst one indeed
DeleteDont worry mr Atiku they wl soon repatrate you from nigeria they wl send u to exile wiate and see
ReplyDeleteThis issue doesn't call for unnecessary noise. If Nyako knows fully well that he is free of all charges against him, let him go to the court. Former governor Peter Obi was wrongly impeached but he took his case to court and he was given back his position.
ReplyDeleteLol! Atiku didn't raise his voice during the process, he's now talking after the impeachment has been carried out. What is the crying going to achieve at this time?
ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt that the FG and PDP must have dolled out some millions to those rascals to impeach the governor. If the governor were to remain a PDP loyalist, there would have been nothing like that. The FG is only creating more trouble even that it has not been able to settle the BH it created. The impeachment plan will now be directed to other governors that denounced PDP membership.
ReplyDeleteWere you there when FG paid the money? Was Nyako guilty as charged or not? Your Nyako could not defend himself why do it for him. Be it PDP or APC any Governor found wanting from stealing from civil servants will face the wrath of God & man. Please stop defending bad leaders. God is cleaning & answering our prayers.
DeleteThe north conspired with the west and removed Okadigbo and Nwagbara as Senate Presidents respectively and you are now there making noise , wear the shoes and feel the pains .
