71,709 vote for new LCDAs in Ekiti

A total of 71,709 Ekiti people said 'Yes' for new Local Council Development Areas in the referendum conducted on Saturday by the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission.

According to the results submitted on Monday to the House of Assembly by the Chairman of the Commission, Mrs. Bosede Adelusi, only 2,815 said 'No'.

The breakdown of the results showed that the total number of 'Yes' in Ado Local Government was 3,521 while 'No' vote was nil.

In Ekiti East "Yes" votes were 2,310 with 256 'No' votes; Ekiti West, 8,729 "Yes" votes and one "No" vote while Ekiti South West had 17,725 "Yes" votes and nil "No" vote.

Gbonyin Local Government had 5,163 "Yes" votes with 26 "No" votes; Ido-Osi Local Government, 2,845 "Yes" votes and 49 "No" votes, while Ijero had 6,059 "Yes" votes as against 1,076 "No" votes.

Ikere Local Government recorded 3,427 "Yes" votes and nil "No" vote; Ikole Local Government 2,518 "Yes" votes, 1,183 "No" votes; Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government, 4,926 "Yes" and 223 "No" votes.

Moba Local Government recorded 10,088 "Yes" votes and nil "No" vote while it was 4,398 'yes' votes as against one 'No' vote in Oye Local Government.

The Peoples Democratic Party had on Sunday in a statement urged the Assembly to ignore the referendum results.

But Adelusi who led the EKSIEC delegation to the Assembly said the commission was right in conducting the referendum.

Receiving the results, the Speaker, Dr. Adewale Omirin, promised that the Assembly would act promptly on the results.

According to him, the new LCDAs, which will ultimately lead to Local Government Council Areas is in line with the resolve of the Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to bring governance nearer to the people.

He referred the document to the Chairman of House Ad-hoc Committee on Local Government Creation, Taiwo Orisalade, who is the Deputy Speaker, for action.

Orisalade promised to quickly look into the results of the referendum and later refer same back to the whole House for debate, before taking a final decision.
