11 killed in fresh attack in Plateau

No fewer than 11 people have been killed at Zamadede in the Pil-Gani district of Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The victims were killed in the early hours of Monday in a fresh violence that had seen Fulani herdsmen and local inhabitants fighting each other.

The incident is coming a week after some gunmen opened fire at some Muslim worshippers in the Bukuru area of Jos South council area, wounding three persons .

It was learnt that the herdsmen attacked the villagers while they were still asleep and ransacked two communities in the area.

Among those killed were said to be a 45-year-old mother with her little son and a pregnant woman.
Eyewitness said that the gunmen on approaching the villages had shot severally to wake the villagers from their sleep and went ahead to set their homes on fire.

An eyewitness, Mrs. Baby Hosea, who lost two members of her family, told our correspondent that the hoodlums took them unawares while they were fast asleep.

"We were just sleeping when all of a sudden we heard gunshots all over the place. Confused, people ran out of their houses; while some were lucky to have escaped, others just ran into the hoodlums only to be cut down to death," she said.

A member representing Langtang North and South constituency in the House of Representatives, Ms. Beni Lar, who described the incident as sad, also expressed worries over the recent attacks on her constituency.
She told newsmen at her family residence in Jos that the new wave of attack had disturbed the peace of the people.

She described communities attacked as peace-loving and hardworking farmers, who depended on the crops they produce for survival.

Lar said, "I wonder   why some people could be so cruel as to take the   lives of innocent citizens, particularly at the time the Federal Government, through the National Conference, is trying to find a lasting solution to farmers/herdsmen clashes."

The lawmaker appealed to the people of her constituency to remain calm and be law-abiding, promising that security agencies would fish out the perpetrators of the attack.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abu Emmanuel, said the policemen in the area had been trying to get the details of the incident.
