You are a colossal failure, APC tells Niger govt

The Niger State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has described the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state as a colossal failure.

However, the state government in a swift reaction accused the opposition APC of blackmailing it to make cheap political points.

APC said there was nothing to show for the seven years’ administration of the party despite billions of naira collected from the Federation Account by the government within the period.

In a statement signed by the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Jonathan Vasta, the party said the last Democracy Day, which was celebrated without funfare in the state was because the government had nothing to showcase for its seven years administration.

Vasta said that apart from the revenue that accrued to the state within the period, the government collected N36 billion bond without anything tangible to show for the collosal amount.

APC further noted that while other state governments used the opportunity of the Democracy Day to showcase their achievements in all spheres of life, the Niger State failed to do so, and instead, chose to move its officials to Abuja for what was termed “interactive session on the seven years of governor Babangida Aliyu as governor of Niger State.”

“Apart from the over N200 million tax payers money that was wasted on that jamboree in Abuja, Governor Babangida Aliyu has demonstrated that his administration has failed the people and has nothing to show for the several billions of naira that the government has collected from the
Federation Account in the past seven years apart from the N36 billion bond he has collected,” Vasta added.

Cheap political points
Reacting to the accusation, Governor Aliyu in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Israel Ebije, however, said the interaction programme held in Abuja was organised by association of civil society groups and not the state government.

He said: “As a responsible government, we embraced the public debate which was indeed a litmus test on the dividends of democracy provided in the last seven years.

“We, as a government, are not afraid of critical appraisals and we have gone beyond petty talks from the opposition which is only trying to propagate self agenda.”

Aliyu, therefore, asked the APC leadership to engage in constructive criticisms rather than resorting to blackmail and trying to score cheap popularity.
