WORLD CUP: I will surprise the Super Eagles with quality rewards - Jonathan


President Goodluck Jonathan has promised to surprise the Super Eagles with quality rewards if they make a major impact at the 2014 World Cup.



Senate President David Mark, who led a Federal Government delegation to the Eagles camp in Campinas on Friday, conveyed the President’s message to the players, and also had an open day with their fans on the same date. The President did not give any hint as what the reward would be.

The President is confident that an African country can win the World Cup this term.

Jonathan, who says the Eagles are well motivated, hinges his position on the mark of the Nigerian Olympic team at Atlanta ‘96.

He said, “When we won the Olympics gold medal at Atlanta 96, we defeated countries like Argentina and Brazil, so I believe we can have a repeat performance at this year’s World Cup, with the talents available to us in this team.”

Mark also presented Eagles coach Stephen Keshi and team captain Joseph Yobo with the national flag.

All the 23 players also received the national flag with all of them assuring the President that they would not let down the nation.

The delegation, which had two governors, Senators and four ministers, then held a private session with the players and coaches on issues concerning the team’s welfare.

The players had threatened to boycott their Monday match against Iran if they were not paid their share of the FIFA World Cup grant to the country.

Before the private meeting, Mark assured the players that the government was ready to do all it could within available resources to make the team comfortable in Brazil.

He added that he would stay back in Brazil for all the team’s matches in the opening round.

Nigeria Football Federation President, Aminu Maigari, said he was thrilled that such a delegation was in Brazil to motivate the players and officials of the team, stressing that with the calibre of players in the team, Nigerians should be hopeful of a quality outing bythe team.

Keshi said he was happy to see top government functionaries visiting the team before they opened their campaign.
