Ritualists gouge out prostitute’s eyes in Bayelsa

Suspected ritualists have gouged out the eyes of a lady suspected to be a commercial sex worker in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

It was learnt that the unnamed lady, who was a resident prostitute of the notorious Yenagoa red light district called Good Evening Street on Hospital Road in downtown Yenagoa, met her Waterloo on Monday.

It was also learnt that the young lady, said to be from Akwa Ibom State, found herself in the present mess when she followed some ‘customers’ to a rendezvous in a community outside the Yenagoa metropolis.

She was said to have been invited along with two other prostitutes by the three persons who came in one Sport Utility Vehicle with a promise to be given N30,000 each.

However, the other girls sensing the mission of the men were sinister, refused to go. But the lady, carried away by the promised money, decided to go alone with the three men.

The men were said to have stopped at a bush path where they each had round of sex with her. However, after the sex, they allegedly held her down, closed her mouth and gouged out her two eyes.

After committing the heinous act, the yet-to-be-ascertained ritualists allegedly dumped her by the roadside and fled the scene.

It was gathered that her cry of anguish by the roadside later attracted motorists passing through the road to her.

She was said to have narrated her ordeal to the motorists who took pity on her and took her to a nearby police station.

It was gathered that it was the police that took the lady to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.

When our correspondent visited the FMC on Wednesday, the hospital workers were on strike.

However, a consultant who did not want his name mentioned, said a lady from Akwa Ibom whose eyes were plucked out was brought to the hospital.

When our correspondent sought to know where she was kept in the hospital to meet her, the consultant said the lady had been moved out of the hospital.

“Since none of her relations came since the incident happened last week, her case has been handed over to the state directorate of social welfare. I learnt that the department has taken her to her state,” he said.

In a related development, policemen of the State Special Security outfit, Operation Doo Akpo, have thwarted attempt by an angry mob to set ablaze a suspected ritualist over alleged abduction of a six-year-old boy in the Azikoro Village area of Yenagoa.

The attempt by the man was said to have provoked anger and sense of insecurity among residents of the area.

An eyewitness, who gave his name only as Ebitimi, claimed that the suspect who is a truck pusher, identified simply as Aboki, had asked the boy to get him a sachet of water.

Ebitimi alleged that when the boy came with the water, the suspect gagged him and dropped him inside a sack.

He said, “He fixed cotton wool inside the nose of the boy and tied up the sack. The sack was then dropped into the truck he was pushing. He pretended to continue his business of hitting the truck and draw attention of residents interested in disposing their refuse or selling unused iron materials.”

But luck ran out on him when a 10-year-old boy who was on errand to buy biscuit saw him putting the boy in the sack reported what he witnessed to some masons working in a nearby building.

“The 10-year-old boy ran to an uncompleted building where some masons were working and raised the alarm. The quick action of the men at the site led to the rescue of the boy and the arrest of the suspect.”

Attempts by angry residents to set the suspect ablaze with disused tyres were stopped by the quick arrival of the police.

Contacted on the development, the spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, said he had not been briefed.

“Though the details of the two incidents are not immediately available, the command is doing everything possible to ensure security of lives and property in the state. We need the people to be cautious and not take law into their hands,” Akhigbe said.
