REVEALED: How policeman died while preventing suicide bomber from killing more people in the Abuja mall attack

A policeman was allegedly killed on Wednesday while trying to prevent the bomber from driving into the Emab plaza, Abuja to wreck maximum havoc and increase the casualty rate.

The policeman who apparently saved thousands from being killed, was said to have stopped the driver of the bomb-laden car from driving into the plaza when he attempted to jump the queue of cars that were driving into the plaza.

A policeman at the scene informed our correspondent on Thursday, that the unidentified policeman later chased after the vehicle and was about catching up with it when a loud blast ripped through the car and killed the bomber and the policeman by the exit gate.

He said,"The bomber attempted to drive into the plaza in order to cause maximum damage and kill a lot of people. He however aroused the suspicion of a policeman who was nearby and the policeman prevented him from driving into the plaza and as he was driving away, he followed him but within a few seconds, the car exploded at the plaza's exit gate killing the policeman and the bomber."

The death of the policeman could not be ascertained as the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, said he was not aware, but he noted that it would be investigated.

Meanwhile, some commercial banks around the scene of the blast have agreed to provide the CCTV footage of the incident to security agencies to assist them in their investigation of the blast.

Our correspondent learnt that security agencies had contacted the security staff of Ecobank, who have agreed to make the video footage of the blast available on demand.

Security personnel of Ecobank were seen around the scene even as foreign forensic experts worked at the crater of the blast.

A staff of Diamond Bank who declined to give his name, said he was at his desk on the first floor when he heard a loud explosion that shook the building to its foundation.

The banker explained that two cars belonging to his colleagues were torched by the burning carcass of a car that was flung from the blast scene.

He explained that the management of the plaza, had been working to prevent an attack on the facility, adding that it had changed the private security firm in charge of the plaza twice in the last few months when it was not satisfied with their performance.

According to him, the sacked private firms were not checking the boots of vehicles entering the plaza, but the new firm that took over had been doing well.

He said, "I was in the office when I heard the blast and everybody ran outside. One of our private security guards sustained some injuries and two cars belonging to my colleagues were burnt. I was very lucky because my car narrowly escaped being damaged by flying debris from the blast. Some people did not even remember to wear their shoes."

The banker said that a charred body was removed from the carcass of the car that was flung to the frontage of the bank.

  3. I don't think it is wise to inform the public of security procedures like who's going to provide the CCTV video footage covering the incident, to the extent of naming the particular bank that intends to offer this help. I don't think it encourages future cooperation of people if their identity should be easily exposed like this.....my humble opinion.

  5. I also hope the FG will adequately compensate the family of this active policeman & let the nation know how they did so that others will be encouraged to be dedicated to the course of their duty.
