Police raid kidnappers’ den arrest 37 in Abia

The renewed campaign against kidnapping in Abia State recorded huge success as the state's Police Command said it had raided one Ugorji compound at Obingwa Local Government Area used by hoodlums as training school for kidnappers.

Briefing newsmen in Umuahia, Commissioner of Police, Admu Ibrahim, said 37 suspects where arrested by his men during the raid.

The raid according to him was carried out following a tip off that some hoodlums were using the compound located at Umuoke village near Bible College Road, as a training ground for kidnappers.
The police boss assured that security agencies had since stepped up surveillance in the state to ensure safety of lives and property, assuring residents of their safety.

Paraded also was a suspected kidnapper who in connivance with other fleeing members of his gang, abducted one Ikechukwu Chiedogo.

According to the police, following a distress call by the wife of the victim, Ogechukwu Chiedogo, about the abduction of her husband from their compound, a chase was given the fleeing kidnappers by the anti- terror squad of the police.

He said as his men were closing in on the kidnappers, the criminals opened fire on them, but two of the abductors fell in the ensuing gun duel.

One of the gunmen was later arrested while efforts were on top gear to round up other fleeing members of the gang according to police source, which added that one AK 47 rifle with two empty magazines were recovered.

Similarly, the CP said his men received a distress call on June 23 that one Okechukwu Ovimpam was kidnapped by Ifeanyi Eluaga, and Abuchi Ohaeri, following which a team of police was dispatched to rescue the victim.

Consequently, a deserted compound at Eluama Isuikwuato where the criminals fled to was raided by police as the kidnappers turned violent.

One of the suspects, Eluaga, was hit by a bullet and arrested, while others escaped with bullet wounds.
The victim, according to police was also rescued and restored to the family.

In a related development, police said it was alerted of a letter of threat addressed to one Friday Nweke by kidnappers who were making a demand of N300,000 from the complainant.

Acting on this tip-off, police said operatives swept into action which resulted in the arrest of two suspects – one Jones Nwabeke and Okwukwe Udo, who would be charged to court after investigations.

  1. Thump Up for Abia Police Command. We should always learn how to encourage and support the police for our own good. Police need everybody's support to perform their duty well. That we have few bad eggs in The Force is not enough to generalise.

  2. I think Idiagbon - like punishment should be meted out to all convicted persons involved in violent crime like armed robbery and kidnapping in the South East. This will serve as a deterrent to other people or parents that at times seem to encourage their children by aiding and abetting such crime and criminality. Some parent by their actions and inaction encourage their children to take to such crime because of the huge sums of money that can be realised. It is sad that money has become the Gods people in this geo-political zone worships.A zone where cerebral content and common sense count for nothing except one brandishes often ill- gotten wealth. Also, respect for elders also count for nothing now. Then tell me where such people are headed for.Even if they have a country of their own just imagine what it will be like? Money! Money! Money! Money! Money!Just for the fun of showing off with such ill-gotten and barbaric acquisition. God will save us from these vampires!
