Police parade seven for kidnapping in Calabar

The Cross River State command of the Nigeria Police has recorded a breakthrough in the fight against child stealing following the arrests of seven people suspected to be involved in the act.
The suspects include five men and two women.

The suspects were Victor Bassey, 30; Essien Bassey Essien, 38; Samuel Oku, 31; Mrs Uduak Asuquo, 28; Ekurebe Onyedikachi, age unspecified; Grace Peter, age unspecified; and Eyo Etim Edet, 34.

Also two children aged nine months and 13 years were rescued from the suspects.

Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, Mr. Ganiyu Abdulsalami, who paraded the suspects told newsmen that the command's arrests from different child stealing attempts was a major breakthrough in the fight against the menace in Calabar.

He urged members of the public not to kill suspected child abductors as it was the only means of getting information that would aid in stemming the problem.

He rued at a situation a couple of weeks ago where a suspected child thief was lynched.

"We should not take the laws into our hands. If the public catches a suspect, they should hand him over to the police. We should not resort to jungle justice. If you kill a suspect, you have killed a lot of information that would help us, because these people work in a racket.

"The ones we have in custody have given us useful information that has aided us to track their accomplices all the way to Abia and Imo states. Cross River is a civilized state and we would not condone barbaric acts as jungle justice," he said.
